Stargazers will witness a trifecta of lunar events in the New Year - a total lunar eclipse, a super blood Moon and a "Wolf Moon," a nickname for a full Moon that appears in the middle of winter.
Millions of people across North and South America and portions of western Europe and Africa will be able to catch the rare sight overnight on January 20 into January 21, according to National Geographic. For a few hours, the moon will give off a bright reddish glow.
"A total lunar eclipse can happen only when the Sun, Earth and Moon are perfectly lined up - anything less than perfection creates a partial lunar eclipse or no eclipse at all," Space.com explains.
You won't want to miss it. Earth won't experience another total lunar eclipse, which occurs when the entire Moon enters Earth's shadow, until May 2021, NASA estimates.

Ten Reasons to Go English Country Dancing
1 It’s Really, Really Fun.
2 It’s Easy: If you can count and skip and tell your right hand from your left, you can begin doing the easy dances immediately. This form of dance does not require fancy footwork or a high level of coordination. This is an excellent place to learn, even if you’ve never done any folk dancing. Beginners are very welcome.
3 It’s Social: The level of interaction that occurs between all the dancers in the set make this a very social dance form. Singles or partners are welcome. This is a very friendly community, and a great way to meet new people.
4 It’s Good Exercise: How many calories did you burn the last time you watched a TV show? Yeah, that’s what we thought. Although English country dancing is not as strenuous as a workout at the gym, it does a whole lot more for your health than a sitcom and a bag of potato chips. It’s a good, light exercise.
5 It’s Casual: We are not a performance troupe, so our goal is not to make the dances look perfect. Our goal is to have fun, and we can do that without requiring technical perfection. Come as you are, wear casual clothes, relax and enjoy it.
6 It’s Low-Tech: Tired of staring at a computer screen all day? So are we. Come dance with us! We won’t require you to look at a computer screen all night. We promise!
7 Indulge Your Inner Anglophile: Come on, you know you want to.
8 It’s Good Clean Fun: Although English country dance has been known to lead to Renaissance Faire addiction, apart from that, it’s totally harmless. (Actually, we love our local Renaissance Faire, especially the Newcastle Country Dancers.)
9 It Brings Together People of All Ages: This form of entertainment appeals to a wide range of ages, which helps bridge the gap between generations. Whether you’re a teen, a septuagenarian, or someone in between, there’s a place here for you.
10 Did We Mention That It’s Really, Really Fun?
Come dance with us! We usually meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, from 7:00—9:30 p.m., at Peace United Church (upper hall), 900 High Street, Santa Cruz, California. (We meet on only the second Thursday in November and December.)
Stop by for food, games and a chance to win prizes! Meet La Manzana Community Resources' Triple P practitioners, sign up for a Triple P class or one-on-one services, and learn about other organizations that support children and families.

The greatest cat in the Americas-the jaguar-is a symbol for strength, power, and wilderness. Jaguars thrive in the fabled Pantanal of Brazil, but in the Ibera wetlands of Argentina, they've been gone for nearly a century. Now one of the most ambitious wildlife projects in the world is working to bring them back-along with a "Noah's Ark" of South American wildlife that was lost in a tragic era of exploitation and overhunting. Far-sighted conservationists Doug and Kris Tompkins have a vision of restoring this landscape to its primeval grandeur, and miraculously, it's working.
Join us for a new presentation by renowned photographer Frans Lanting and his partner Chris Eckstrom in celebration of two wilderness areas in South America-Brazil's Pantanal and Argentina's Ibera. Frans and Chris recently returned from a month of travel in this unique part of the world with fresh impressions. They will regale us with their images, stories, and videos about the natural and human history of these spectacular wetlands which are home to the "giants" of South America: the giant anteater, giant otter, rhino-like tapirs, colorful macaws-the largest parrots in the world, endearing capybaras-Earth's largest rodent, and of course, the jaguar-largest cat in the Americas. Frans and Chris will share personal observations and highlight conservation successes here that inspire hope.
Proceeds will benefit the marine science education and conservation programs at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at UC Santa Cruz's Long Marine Lab.

SC Bike Party loves your creativity and building community on bicycles. Come join us for our January ride. Costumes encouraged, but definitely not required.
Santa Cruz Bike Party is a mobile party for riders of all ages, experience levels, and types to meet, ride, and play together in the streets. Rides are 7-10 miles long with music and dance breaks along the way. Rides move at a relatively slow pace and no one is left behind. Each ride has a theme and riders are encouraged to wear costumes or decorate their bikes to fit the theme. But cha don't gotta...
SC Bike Party starts and ends outside the Bike Church at 703 Pacific Ave downtown. The route is not the same every time, but each month organizers will post the route online ahead of time in case anyone misses the start and wants to catch up.
Once per month, all year long. We meet at 7pm every second Friday of the month. Rides usually leave about 7:15 and last about 2 hours.
Guidelines
The atmosphere of the SC Bike Party is fun, friendly, welcoming, and safe. Our goal is to celebrate cycling and build community, not to cause conflict with car drivers. Please help us maintain a positive and safe atmosphere by keeping in mind the following guidelines:
- Stay to the Right / Stop at Lights - This is not Critical Mass. Please stay to the right on 2-lane roads, or in the right lane on larger roads.
- Ride Straight - Please help avoid crashes by riding predictably, without any sudden turns or stops.
- Don't Hate - Please roll past any conflict that might present itself during the ride.
- Pack your Trash - Bike partiers aspire to leave party stops in better condition than we found them.
- Don't Get Smashed - Riding while inebriated poses a danger to yourself and others. Don't ruin the fun for everyone else by overdoing it.
Bring
Lights - Rides are at night, so let's make sure to be visible.
Locks - No bikes have been stolen from the SC Bike Party, but during breaks better to be safe than sorry.
Layers - As we all know Santa Cruz evenings can get damp and chilly.
Water, snacks - Our stops are not always near stores, so best to bring what you need.
Tube, patch kit, pump, tools - The ride is unsupported; please come prepared.

DEMO INFO: Having taught multiple classes on Art Journaling, led field trip paint-alongs, and completed stacks of her own Art Journals, Ruth Korch is a wealth of information on Art Journaling. A passionate lover of letterforms, she loves to help people incorporate words onto their journal pages. She also loves helping people realize that there are multiple ways to enjoy Art Journaling and to help them find the way that works best for them.
Ruth will be demonstrating an Art Journaling page, not only done in a number of different styles, but in a variety of different mediums. She'll be answering questions like "What do I do if I want to put something in my journal, but only have a few minutes because I'm traveling with someone?," "What kinds of hand lettering work well on Art Journaling pages?," and "How in the world do I begin to capture a vast complicated scene in front of me on a small journaling page?"
Come learn some insider tips and tricks for enjoyable Art Journaling, browse through her journals, ask questions and ultimately get inspired for creating your own unique Art Journals.
ARTIST INFO: Ruth Korch is a local professional artist, calligrapher and art coach. She relishes the variety and continually changing combinations that these roles provide. You may have taken one of her classes in her home or at the Santa Cruz Art League, visited her studio during Open Studios, or seen her artwork on past years' posters of the Capitola Begonia Festival. Her medium choices are varied, but most often she finds expression in watercolor. She especially enjoys the pairing of text and image, and the endless possibilities of combining the power of words with the impact of visual imagery. One of her very favorite ways to do this is with her Art Journaling - capturing every day moments in life and adding beautiful hand lettering to record and remember. She recently traveled with her husband across France, filling her art journal with scenes and moments to treasure and revisit.

San Francisco: Still Wild at Heart - a film by Melissa Peabody
This intriguing film tells the story of the return of coyotes to San Francisco and other American cities. Scientists provide insights into how coyotes impact city ecosystems and how we can coexist with them safely. We learn how ranchers in Marin County are using a combination of humane, non-lethal predator-control methods to protect their livestock and reduce conflicts with coyotes.
Whether you love them, hate them, or just want to learn more about them, this entertaining and informative film will shed light on the unique ability of coyotes to rebound from all attempts to remove them from our midst.
Following the film, guest speaker Camilla Fox, founder and executive director of Project Coyote, will share her knowledge and wisdom about coexisting with coyotes and other carnivores in our midst. Questions are welcome.
Bring your kids to this family-friendly film. View trailer here

WESTERN WEDNESDAY IS BACK!!!
a night of true Country/ Western & Honky Tonk music
Every 2nd Wednesday at The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, CA
one touring band vs. one local band
5/9 - WESTERN WEDNESDAY # 27
Laura Benitez and the Heartache
Earnest Tubb Time Machine
LAURA BENITEZ AND THE HEARTACHE - Country/ Rockabilly from the Bay Area, CA
website: www.laurabenitezandtheheartache.com
video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSAeNYiYvAg
Laura Benitez and the Heartache use the three chord tools of country music to tell the simple, unvarnished truth about love, too much whiskey, and the call of the road. Their songs range from honky-tonk shuffles to rock 'n' roll numbers to sweet old time waltzes, and cover everything from unwed motherhood ("Me or the Baby") to mean drunks ("Don't Wake the Devil"), with a whole lot of heartbreak in between. Their twangy honesty shines through in straightforward arrangements, crystalline harmonies, and spare instrumentation. Frank Gutch Jr of No Depression calls Laura Benitez & the Heartache "... Original, as good as it got and as good as it gets," and Stephan Rapid of Lonesome Highway says, "Her tight and focused band play country music with a view to the past and an ear for the future."
EARNEST TUBB TIME MACHINE - Old Time Party Country from Santa Cruz, CA
The Earnest Tubb Time Machine from Santa Cruz are the best band for drinking and dancing and more drinking!

Sea otters are in a race against time. To survive, they hunt for clams, crabs, urchins, snails, mussels, and abalone down to 100 feet deep. Otters must work quickly since they can hold their breath for only 1-3 minutes per dive, and their prey are often found in rocky crevices or under heavy sand. How do sea otters find enough food to survive each day? Which senses are used to locate food? How are decisions made about what to eat and what to ignore? Scientists have discovered that sea otters are fast decision makers-with the help of their ultra-sensitive paws and whiskers.
Join the Seymour Marine Discovery Center to explore why the sense of touch may be useful to a hungry sea otter, as well as how researchers work cooperatively with animals to learn how they perceive the world.

This 6-week series of classes introduces you to mindfulness meditation practices. Because the class curriculum builds on itself, please begin the course no later than week 3 (Monday, March 11). Registration is recommended.
Grounded in ancient wisdom traditions and adapted for modern life, mindfulness practice can help us lower psychological and physical stress, communicate more effectively, improve focus, and increase self-awareness and compassion.
Topics to be covered include Putting a Pause in Autopilot, Being Right Where You Are, The Storytelling Mind, and Re-wiring the Brain for Joy and Happiness. Practices taught include mindfulness of body, breath, thoughts, and feelings, as well as meditation practices that cultivate compassion for self and others. This is an experiential class and the skills developed come directly out of the class practice as well as a home practice. Small and large group discussion (bringing the quality of kind awareness to listening and talking) help us come to a more clear understanding of the practice.
Classes are taught by Ann Bolger Peruzzi, PhD.

Class taught by Ann Bolger Peruzzi, PhD
Ann Bolger Peruzzi has a PhD in Clinical Psychology, specializing in addictions. She began a mindfulness practice 15 years ago through the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program with teachers Jon Kabat-Zinn, who originally developed MBSR in 1979 to help people heal from chronic pain, and Bob Stahl. Ann incorporated mindfulness principles and practices into her clinical work, trained to teach MBSR and Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), and eventually became an instructor of these programs. Through the years she has deepened her practice through longer retreats and study. In addition, she is certified to teach Qi Gong, an ancient healing movement practice through Master Lee Holden.
Currently, as a student in the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program (Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach teachers) she is teaching mindfulness and Qi Gong to men in recovery from addiction at an inpatient treatment facility in Watsonville. She is so grateful to be living and working here on the coast, raising boy-girl twin teenagers with her husband of 20 years. She is passionate about helping others find access to their own inner healing wisdom and achieve a greater sense of happiness and well-being.

On exhibition from January 12 - April 7, 2019 will be a selection of artwork from Ann Thiermann's series of pastel and acrylic paintings.
This series invites the viewer to linger visually over the flora and fauna along the pathways of Santa Cruz's extraordinarily diverse park system.
Here, state parks, open spaces, land trust easements, and both county and city parks offer pathways from meandering river to pounding surf, sandy chaparral to cool redwoods, and meadow lands to conifer forests. Ann examines the beauty of these regional parks in a variety of seasonal and weather conditions.
A companion book, which will be available through the Museum bookstore, includes 60 paintings, an inclusive map, historical anecdotes, and an overview of the artistic process for creating each work.
Opening reception on Sunday January 13, 2019, at 2pm. Refreshments provided. Cost free, donations appreciated.
