The 60's Musical is the ultimate celebration of 1960's female empowerment. Featuring such timeless classics as "My Boyfriend's Back", "Be My Baby", "Son of a Preacher Man", and "Me and Bobby McGee", Beehive nostalgically recalls the days of miniskirts, transistor radios and flower power. Told from the perspective of six young women who came of age in this enigmatic decade, these young ladies look back on a host of issues ranging from their first Beehive Dance to the challenges we faced as a nation - a theme that is even now resonating in the 21st century.

Songs Include The Name (New) Game, Natural Woman, Deep, Mountain High (Deeman), My Boyfriend's Back, One Fine Day, To Sir With Love, It's My Party, Proud Mary, Where The Boys Are, Make Your Own Kind Of Music

This year's theme, A UNIVERSE OF STORIES, was chosen to help inspire children of all ages to dream big, believe in themselves,
Date: Every day (Jun 1-Aug 10)

The Santa Cruz Public Libraries' (SCPL) Summer Reading Program, A UNIVERSE OF STORIES, begins June 1st and runs through August 10th. Our entire program has been revamped this year in order to be more inclusive and to put an even greater focus on reading. Studies have shown that reading just 5 books over the summer can significantly reduce Summer Slide - a term for the learning loss experienced over the summer.

This year's theme, A UNIVERSE OF STORIES, was chosen to help inspire children of all ages to dream big, believe in themselves, and create their own story. It also celebrates the richness of perspectives that arise when we include stories from diverse people. And finally, we celebrate 50 years of space exploration and the anniversary of the lunar landing.

We are excited to present 3 SUMMER READING KICKOFF EVENTS to celebrate the beginning of the new program. Bring your picnic blankets, chairs, and lunches for these free family events:

  • A Universe of Stories with Nikki Borodi   Start summer off on Sunday June 9th 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Duck Island Stage in San Lorenzo Park. Nikki Borodi is a performance artist, singer, song-writer, ukulele player and acrobat! She brings her acrobatic musical storytelling to Santa Cruz with bubbles, balloon animals, magic, and acrobatics to delight all ages.
  • Coventry & Kalusa  Join us for some fun in the sun and sign-up for summer reading while playing with bubbles, hula hoops and more on Saturday June 15th at Anna Jean Cumming Park (AKA Blueball Park) from 11 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. From 12-1 p.m. enjoy a special performance by award winning circus artists Coventry and Kaluza. They will be juggling, hula hooping, playing music, doing some comedy and more.
  • Percussion with James Henry   Sign-up for summer reading while playing with bubbles, hula hoops and more on Sunday June 16th from 12 - 3 p.m. at Highlands County Park in Ben Lomond. From 1 - 2 p.m. enjoy a special performance by James Henry, master percussionist. Expect to dance, sing, be involved and be transported to many areas of the globe through the sounds of drums and percussion!

How to Participate

To sign up, visit santacruzpl.org/srp or visit any branch library, the Bookmobile, or a Summer Reading Kickoff event. Signups begin June 1st and participants have until August 10th to sign out of the program and receive their rewards. Participants of all ages are encouraged to read books 5 books of their own choosing, listen to audio books, or be read to.

MAH LONELINESS EXHIBITION -- BY AND ABOUT SENIORS -- OPENS APRIL 5th

There's an invisible epidemic on the rise in Santa Cruz County's senior population. And it's something you may have felt before, too.

Loneliness and social isolation affect 1 in 3 seniors in Santa Cruz County. Many seniors contact just one person a week; some said they see a visitor less than once a month. Because of this, people 60 years and older who reported feeling lonely saw a 45% increase in risk of death.*

Opening April 5th, "We're Still Here: Stories of Seniors and Social Isolation" sheds light on this local crisis and gives visitors the tools to help. It also shares solutions to loneliness from different cultures and families around the world. It's not your typical exhibition; over 180 seniors, advocates, and organizations created this show themselves in partnership with the MAH.

"When we learned about this growing issue affecting senior health and well being, we felt the MAH was in a unique position to address it," said Stacey Marie Garcia, Director of Community Engagement at the MAH. "We're all about creating connections and hope to ignite stronger links between seniors and the larger Santa Cruz County community through this exhibition."

(0 A 0 March) Loneliness.jpgTheir Story, Told Their Way

To tell this story, the MAH used a simple- but non-traditional- strategy: give seniors the power to design this exhibition themselves. For many museums, this is not how exhibition design operates. Typically, there is strict curatorial control over decisions big and small, from the themes of the exhibition to the title itself.

That's not how it worked for "We're Still Here: Stories of Seniors and Social Isolation" (a title brainstormed by the group.) From the beginning, it was a fiercely democratic process. Last September, the MAH reinvigorated the Creative Community Committee (C3), an action-oriented gathering of 186 seniors, advocates, and organizations that live this issue every day. Over the course of seven months, the group brainstormed big ideas, worked with local artists to creatively articulate the issues, and talked about ways the public can help. This was the second incarnation of C3 for this purpose; the first was in the 2017 exhibition Lost Childhoods: Voices of Santa Cruz County Foster Youth and the Foster Youth Museum which gathered 100 voices from the local foster youth community for an exhibition of similar structure.

Among the big themes of "We're Still Here", one thread is clear: Santa Cruz needs to know about this problem, step into what it feels like, and even take actions to help.

Transforming Empathy into Action

With a topic so heavy, it can be easy to walk away feeling disempowered and sad. That's why We're Still Here dedicates an entire wall to actions the public can take to help.

Drive a senior to go grocery shopping. Translate written materials into Spanish for a monolingual elder. Donate an iPod for entertainment. If you have a special skill, offer it. If you just want to give money, you could do that too. These actions were developed with the dozens of organizations participating in C3, among them The County of Santa Cruz Human Services Department, Seniors Council of Santa Cruz County, and Community Bridges.

Visitors can explore 45 actions on a wall of business cards that contain ways to follow up and contact information. If one action resonates with them, they can take a card home to complete it.

Telling Stories Through Art

To help translate senior stories, the MAH connected the C3 group with five local artists: Wes Modes, Gina Orlando, Ry Faraola, Cid Pearlman, and The Pajaro Valley Quilt Association. They built relationships with the seniors, understood their stories, and transformed them into visual, audio, and performative experiences for the exhibition.

Wes Modes met with seniors to create 'Words of Wisdom', an audio piece recording their stories. Visitors can hear twenty different stories by picking up a telephone and listening in.

Gina Orlando empowered seniors with photography. She gave each senior a camera and worked with them one-on-one to capture words and images from their daily lives.

Choreographer Cid Pearlman asked seniors to describe what social isolation looked like to them. Inspired by their imagery, she created three physical rooms in the exhibition: a bedroom, a kitchen, and a "room of the mind." During this exhibition, dancers will be periodically activating these rooms with movement.

We're Still Here opens April 5th through September 22nd, 2019. This exhibition was made possible by the following sponsors: Visiting Angels, Care from the Heart, County of Santa Cruz Human Services Department, Community Foundation Santa Cruz, Arts Council Santa Cruz County, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Bay Photo, Canyon View Capital, Anonymous, In Memory of Al Killingsworth, and MAH Members.
