Featured Events:

40th annual "Ramayana!"
A story of love, adventure, separation and an eventual joyous reunion, in an ancient allegory of the battle of good and evil
Every day (Jun 7-Jun 10)
Location: Mexican Heritage Theater, 1700 Alum Rock Avenue, San Jose Map

"Ramayana!" the Mount Madonna School's "sword-and-sorcery" production now in its 40th year and featuring an original rock-n-roll score and magical characters who encounter danger and love, good versus evil, duty, heroic action and sacrifice, will have performances June 7 to 10 at the Mexican Heritage Theater here, according to a press release.

The story of the Ramayana, as first told by the poet Valmiki, has endured for 2600 years as one of the world's most widely-read classics. The Mount Madonna production focuses on a small part of the larger Hindu epic's story and tells the story of Prince Ram, who, banished from his homeland of Ayodhya, leaves with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman to seek a new home. On their journey, they encounter an array of colorful beings, including tribal folk and gentle forest animals, giants and wizards, heroic monkeys and bears, an enchanted golden deer, a kingdom of demons led by the evil 10-headed Lord Ravana, and a wild, fire-breathing dragon.

(0 A May 2018) RamayanaDragon2.jpgThe show features a cast of some 200 student actors, ages 3 to 18, accompanied by a choir and adult musicians.

It is a story of love, adventure, separation and an eventual joyous reunion, in an ancient allegory of the battle of good and evil. The show is filled with exciting action, spectacular costuming and family humor. A rich performing arts tradition and integrated arts curriculum make MMS performances outstanding, said the release.

State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

From a reviewer: 9/12/2016

"I've been to botanical gardens around the US and other countries, and this one is truly world class. I can't believe I've lived here for years and had never gone. I was worried that there might not be many things blooming since it's September, but there were so many amazing flowers packed together, that I can't even imagine what it's like in the spring. The ratio of plants-to-walking is really excellent. Every square foot of the garden seems carefully planned to pack in more wonderful things to see, all meticulously labeled and growing vigorously."
