Maryjo Koch and the Art of Scientific Illustration

popout1804-maryjoMaryjo Koch doesn't overlook the little things. When it comes to painting birds nests and honeybees, every little twig and hair matters. With acute attention to detail and precision, Koch is one of the world's most accomplished naturalist painters around.

Her hyperrealistic specimens are often found in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where Koch works. She has illustrated 18 books, and her work has been featured across the globe.

Vinyasa yoga is the traditional form of yoga in which the coordination of movement with breath is integral. Postures are practiced to align, strengthen, and promote flexibility in the body. Additional breathing techniques and meditation are also commonly practiced. Each of our instructors shapes the focus, pace, and structure of the practice with their unique teaching style.

All Levels is an intermediate paced class that is also appropriate for students who have been practicing for at least one year. Alternative poses will be suggested during class so that students can tailor the practice to match their comfort and level of experience.

Children 3-7

This class offers kids a fun opportunity to combine the calm of yoga with the energizing creativity of dance. Each class offers a mixture of art, yoga, reading, music, and dance, with an emphasis on play and imagination. Students are given opportunities to both relax their bodies with breathing and relaxation techniques as well as to move their bodies creatively and freely.

State Park Big Basin
Date: Every Sa (Sep 6-Sep 27) at 1:30pm
Ages: Kids 7-12 Admission Fees: $10 parking

Indigenous peoples throughout the world use acorns for food wherever they occur. Acorns have a rare combination of nutrients that today we would call a "superfood." But they must be processed to make them edible. Join docent Steve Stolper as we hike to Sempervirens Falls and Slippery Rock (3.4 miles round trip, 130 feet elevation gain). There we will view ancient Ohlone bedrock mortars and learn about traditional acorn processing techniques. Then we try these techniques ourselves nearby! After lunch, we return to headquarters. Bring at least one liter of water, lunch, snacks, and appropriate clothing that includes a warm jacket. We will be sitting on a rocky surface, so bring a sit pad if you have one. Rain moves the class indoors. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Aromas Grange
Date: Every day

Welcome to the Aromas Community Grange

A Grange, first and foremost, is a group of passionate people dedicated to serving their community, and thereby making the world a better place. Here in Aromas we are fortunate to also have a Grange Hall, a friendly, beautiful facility where Grange members and other community organizations can meet and gather for all kinds of events and activities.

At the state and national levels, the Grange is a political lobbying organization, steadfastly non-partisan and historically focused on protecting the rights of farmers and other small landholders and giving them a political voice. In California, the Aromas Grange is partnering with other action Granges in the state and the new State Grange leadership to help restore the larger Grange institution to its populist roots. Click here to learn more about the California State Grange.

In Aromas the Grange is at the heart of an active, thriving community. If you want to know what's going on in town, come join us and find out! We meet on the second Friday of every month, with a potluck dinner starting at 6:30, the business meeting starts at 7:15.

Monterey State Historic Park
Date: Every Su, Mon, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm

It took a lot of donated cash, but Monterey's historic adobes are open to the public once more.

The Monterey State Historic Park adobes in downtown Monterey were largely closed to the public, along with walking tours, starting in 2007 because of budget cuts.

The tours will consist of the Custom House and its plaza, Pacific House Museum and First Brick House.

The adobes will be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Custom House was the primary port of entry on the Alta California coast and the spot where the American flag was raised in 1846, claiming the land for the United States. At one time, the Custom House presided over Mexico's primary port of entry on the Alta California coast. It was here that Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag in July 1846, claiming over 600,000 square miles of territory for the United States. This territory later was included in all or portions of the states of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, California and New Mexico.

This building is recognized as the oldest government building in California. It is State Historic Landmark #1.

It is $3 for the combined admission to Custom House and Pacific House. Walking tours, which last 50 minutes, are $5. Children 12 and younger are free.
