He has over 30 years of academic experience in the environmental sciences and has held scholarly appointments at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the University of Colorado, the University of Oxford, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Geological Society of London.

Please be aware that some of our dancers are sensitive to fragrances - we respectfully request that everyone please be thoughtful and not use products with fragrance prior to a contra dance.  Thank you!

Come discover Namibia, the cheetah capital of the world. Learn how the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) is working to save these cats from extinction. Loss of habitat, human-wildlife conflict and the illegal wildlife trade have impacted cheetah populations worldwide and there are now less than 8000 left in the wild. Learn about CCF's integrated programs and research aimed at addressing the principle threats to the cheetah and discovers how a guard dog program helps local farmers to protect livestock while saving predators.

After the screening, stay for a question and answer session with Dr. Marker to learn more about the conservation of cheetahs and how it parallels carnivore conservation in California.

We provide many opportunities to visit and experience Gateway, and we encourage families to take advantage of as many of these as desired. The ways to visit range from monthly School Day Tours of our classrooms in action, weekend and evening visit days and open houses at which you can meet and interact with our faculty, privately scheduled tours, and attendance at our school events and celebrations that are open to the public.

Finding the right school for your child and your family is an exciting and challenging endeavor. Contact us anytime if you have questions about our admissions process.

2  It’s Easy: If you can count and skip and tell your right hand from your left, you can begin doing the easy dances immediately. This form of dance does not require fancy footwork or a high level of coordination. This is an excellent place to learn, even if you’ve never done any folk dancing. Beginners are very welcome.

3  It’s Social: The level of interaction that occurs between all the dancers in the set make this a very social dance form. Singles or partners are welcome. This is a very friendly community, and a great way to meet new people.

4  It’s Good Exercise: How many calories did you burn the last time you watched a TV show? Yeah, that’s what we thought. Although English country dancing is not as strenuous as a workout at the gym, it does a whole lot more for your health than a sitcom and a bag of potato chips. It’s a good, light exercise.

5  It’s Casual: We are not a performance troupe, so our goal is not to make the dances look perfect. Our goal is to have fun, and we can do that without requiring technical perfection. Come as you are, wear casual clothes, relax and enjoy it.

6  It’s Low-Tech: Tired of staring at a computer screen all day? So are we. Come dance with us! We won’t require you to look at a computer screen all night. We promise!

7  Indulge Your Inner Anglophile: Come on, you know you want to.

8  It’s Good Clean Fun: Although English country dance has been known to lead to Renaissance Faire addiction, apart from that, it’s totally harmless. (Actually, we love our local Renaissance Faire, especially the Newcastle Country Dancers.)

9 It Brings Together People of All Ages: This form of entertainment appeals to a wide range of ages, which helps bridge the gap between generations. Whether you’re a teen, a septuagenarian, or someone in between, there’s a place here for you.

10  Did We Mention That It’s Really, Really Fun?

SC Bike Party
It takes all kinds, so come and celebrate your different stripes! Join this fun bike ride.
Date: The 2nd Fri of every month at 7:00pm

(0 A January 2019) BikePartyStripes.jpgIt takes all kinds, so come and celebrate your different stripes! So many different types, so little time! From zebra to tiger, rainbow to candy cane, where's waldos to fashionistas, and beyond!

SC Bike Party loves your creativity and building community on bicycles. Come join us for our January ride. Costumes encouraged, but definitely not required.

Santa Cruz Bike Party is a mobile party for riders of all ages, experience levels, and types to meet, ride, and play together in the streets. Rides are 7-10 miles long with music and dance breaks along the way. Rides move at a relatively slow pace and no one is left behind. Each ride has a theme and riders are encouraged to wear costumes or decorate their bikes to fit the theme. But cha don't gotta...

SC Bike Party starts and ends outside the Bike Church at 703 Pacific Ave downtown. The route is not the same every time, but each month organizers will post the route online ahead of time in case anyone misses the start and wants to catch up.

Once per month,
all year long. We meet at 7pm every second Friday of the month. Rides usually leave about 7:15 and last about 2 hours.

Guidelines

The atmosphere of the SC Bike Party is fun, friendly, welcoming, and safe. Our goal is to celebrate cycling and build community, not to cause conflict with car drivers. Please help us maintain a positive and safe atmosphere by keeping in mind the following guidelines:
- Stay to the Right / Stop at Lights - This is not Critical Mass. Please stay to the right on 2-lane roads, or in the right lane on larger roads.
- Ride Straight - Please help avoid crashes by riding predictably, without any sudden turns or stops.
- Don't Hate - Please roll past any conflict that might present itself during the ride.
- Pack your Trash - Bike partiers aspire to leave party stops in better condition than we found them.
- Don't Get Smashed - Riding while inebriated poses a danger to yourself and others. Don't ruin the fun for everyone else by overdoing it.

Bring
Lights - Rides are at night, so let's make sure to be visible.
Locks - No bikes have been stolen from the SC Bike Party, but during breaks better to be safe than sorry.
Layers - As we all know Santa Cruz evenings can get damp and chilly.
Water, snacks - Our stops are not always near stores, so best to bring what you need.
Tube, patch kit, pump, tools - The ride is unsupported; please come prepared.

Date: The 2nd Sa of every month from 11:00am to 3:00pm

Every month we produce a 2nd Saturday on the Farm, a family event that focuses on a particular area of agriculture each month. Visitors can participate in the regular activities of the Ag History Project plus others related to the day's special focus. We host over 2,500 visitors each year at 2nd Saturday on the Farm.

We have created some unique interactive educational activities to help you have fun learning about past agricultural practices. What we like to call our "usual" activities include:

  • Wooden cow milking: we have life-size wooden cows with rubber teats that help you learn how to milk a cow.
  • Kid-driven tractor: we retrofitted a John Deere tractor so that anyone can learn to drive it. You sit in the seat and control the steering wheel while a trained volunteer stands on a platform to your right to controls the speed. We even have space for a parent or friend to stand to your left and enjoy the ride.
  • We are currently working on creating a stationary tractor that you can drive down a crop row and the computer screen in front of you displays how well you are handling the tractor.

Come dance with us!

Live music * easy to learn * high energy * great community!

Upcoming Dances -

This is a traditional New England style of folk dancing, in which each dance is taught and prompted by a caller. What makes it "contra" dancing is that during one 5-to-10-minute dance, each couple "progresses" up or down the hall, eventually dancing with everyone else in the line.

No dancing experience is necessary! It's easy to learn; just follow the instructions. Bringing a partner is NOT required, but do invite your friends!

Beginner's Workshop:  dancers are encouraged to attend the beginner's lesson20 minutes before the regularly-scheduled dances (5:40 or 6:40). Regular dancing begins on the hour (dances can get more complex as the night goes on).

Dances feature gender-neutral dance roles (larks/ravens).

Please

  • Bring soft-soled, non-marking shoes to help protect the floor
  • Keep our dances fragrance free for the comfort of all
  • Bring a snack to share if you have one.
  • Help support our community -- invite a new friend to experience contra dancing

Date: 10/13/2019 from 10:00am to 2:00pm
Ages: 8+ Admission Fees: $40 General | $30 Youth Under 18 | $10 Off for Museum Members

Acorns from the Coast Live Oak and Tan Oak trees have been staples of indigenous cuisine along the central coast of California for millennia.

In this workshop, we will learn how to process acorns using traditional California Indian techniques. We will crack, winnow, pound, and sift the acorns into a fine flour as a group before cooking the acorn into porridge, using a basket and heated rocks from a fire. Everyone will get a chance to taste our final product and come away with an understanding of how acorns are used for food by California Indians. We will also explore how to process other native plants, such as manzanita berries and bay nuts.

Where: Outside, in the Amphitheatre behind the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History
Ages: All youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Must be 8 or older.
Weather: We will have this workshop rain-or-shine, but inclement weather such as severe wind may lead to cancellation
Materials Include: Mortar, pestle, soaproot brush, cooking basket, looped cooking stick

I can't wait to see what creativity the winter months brought out in all of the artists' work!

We're continuing the "Spend $50, get $100" game, too! The Boulder Bucks program works like this - if you spend $50 or more at any local business during the Made in the Mountains event (buying groceries, getting a mani/pedi, buying pizza for the kids' baseball team, .... ) just take your receipt to Emelia at Air & Fire before the event is over. Your name will be added to the drawing that will happen within the week after the event. You could be the one that wins $100 in the form of a gift certificate to spend at a local business of your choice! You can also split the $100 into 2 gift certificates to different businesses.

So, getting the kids pizza could turn into a free necklace for yourself! Or the tools bought at the hardware store could get you a free mani/pedi for after the yardwork is done and some Chinese food for dinner! Nice, right!?

See ya out there!

Date: 10/19/2019

Global Big Day has become a May tradition for tens of thousands of eBirders: 24 hours to put your favorite park/county/state/province country/continent on the global birding stage. Last year we couldn't wait a full year between Global Big Days, and October Big Day was born. On 19 October, October Big Day is back! Can we beat last year's total of 6,331 species on a single October day?
How to participate

Get an eBird account: eBird is a worldwide bird checklist program used by millions of birders. It's what allows us to compile everyone's sightings into a single massive October Big Day list-while at the same time collecting the data for scientists to use to better understand birds. Sign up here. It's 100% free.

Watch birds on 19 October: It's that simple. You don't need to be a bird expert, or go out all day long. Even 10 minutes in your backyard will help. October Big Day runs from midnight to midnight in your local time zone. You can report birds from anywhere in the world.

Enter what you see and hear on eBird: You can enter your sightings via our website or-even easier-download the free eBird Mobile app. You can enter and submit lists while you're still out birding, and the app will even keep track of how far you've walked, so you can focus on watching birds. While you're downloading free apps, try out the Cornell Lab's Merlin Bird ID app for help with identification. Please enter sightings before 23 October to be included in our initial results announcement.

Watch the sightings roll in: During the day, keep an eye on how the lists are growing in different parts of the world. Follow along with sightings from more than 150 countries. Stats will be updated in real-time on our October Big Day page.

"I have been attending the Renaissance Pleasure Faire for over thirty years. Although like most Faires it's booths are more in focus for making money than for historical acuracy, it's fun. The jousting matches are as good as I've seen anywhere and I've been at a lot of different Faires. The people that put on the Faire do an excellent job. Every organism inhabiting the intertidal, the interface of land and sea, has a story to tell. Living in an ever-changing and narrow landscape, these organisms are faced with unique challenges threatening their ultimate survival. We can only explore this diverse habitat when the ocean has receded at low tide and the organisms are exposed to air. With not much time before the high tide returns, what stories could they tell us if we would stop and listen?

Join Allison Gong as she reveals the fascinating secrets of intertidal creatures.

Salt Water Intrusion Along Monterey Bay-Is Our Groundwater Too Salty?
Date: 10/23/2019 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Ages: Recommended for ages 12 & older Admission Fees: Free

The Seymour Center will host a lively and informative panel discussion about the pressing and imminent problem of saltwater intrusion along the Monterey Bay coastline.

For years, groundwater levels in our region have been dropping to record-level lows at such a rate that our aquifers are no longer being naturally replenished by rainfall. As groundwater levels fall, salty ocean water infiltrates inland. The aquifers become contaminated with seawater causing wells to become too salty and unusable. Saltwater intrusion is potentially irreversible and can result in costly changes for the end users. What does this mean for the future? Join us as we reveal the complexities of saltwater intrusion and explore viable solutions with our expert panel.

Andy Fisher, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, UC Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz Farmers Markets
Join us for a flurry of activities for kids and adults alike.
Date: Every Wed (May 7-Oct 29) from 2:30pm to 6:30pm

The Felton Farmers' Market

The Felton Farmers' Market was started in 1987 and is the second oldest market in Santa Cruz County. In 2009, SCCFM took over operations and has since increased the variety of certified organic fruits and vegetables, artisan foods and implemented the EBT/SNAP benefit program.

This seasonal market is a favorite for the communities living in the San Lorenzo Valley and is located in the heart of downtown Felton on Hwy 9. Considered the most kid friendly market in the area, the market provides a centrally located space for parents to leave their  young ones, who can draw, play or get their faces painted. The market is a perfect place for families to come and enjoy the day.

The 2019 Season

The Felton Farmers' Market reopens May 7th. Join us for our annual Free Strawberry Shortcake celebration and check out our seasonal line up. New this season, Tacos El Chuy joins the market offering what many consider the best tacos anywhere. All of your favorite farms are returning and many of our smaller growers from 2018 are bigger and better this season. We also have multiple rotating booths offering products like locally made New York style bagels, fresh jams and mustard, basque inspired pastries and specialty sauces to name a few.

The Felton Farmers' Market brings out your favorite farms weekly, showcasing the best in regional organic produce, pasture raised meats and eggs. This is truly a local market with San Lorenzo Valley-based farms like Old House and R&K Honey. RoliRoti, the country's first and finest gourmet rotisserie food truck, serves sustainably-farmed meats and organic produce at their seasonal best. Local favorite, The Penny Ice Creamery serves up unique flavors like whiskey custard, peach sorbet and honey yogurt persimmon.  See you all soon for the 2019 season.

Date: Every Fri and Sa (Oct 18-Oct 26) from 7:00pm to 9:30pm
Ages: All Ages Admission Fees: $18 Gen, $28 Gold Circle

(0 A September 2019) matilda.jpgInspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however - the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs and an unforgettable star turn for a young actress, Matilda is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

You'll find hundreds of paintings on display, for sale, and entered into competition on Sunday, November 3. You can take home a piece of Capitola culture, vote for your favorites for the People's Choice Award, have a delicious meal from the food trucks, or get creative and make some art yourself!

Dozens of professional artists will paint en plein air in varied mediums, outdoors, throughout Capitola, at locations including New Brighton Beach, Depot Hill, the Esplanade, and the Jewel Box. The public is invited to view those artists in action, from 10:00AM-2:00PM on Saturday, November 2nd.

Then on Sunday, November 3rd, from 11:00AM-4:00PM, at New Brighton Middle School Performing Arts Center (250 Washburn Ave.), more than 100 framed paintings will be on display for the competition, exhibition and sale. The public is invited to vote for the People's Choice Award and enjoy the exhibition, live music by Acoustic Madness, and hands-on art making with Linda Cover of Watershed Arts. Pumpkins are HERE!!

(Special Event Images / Graphics) RodoniFarm_photo.jpg

Pumpkins and fun are what it's all about! Come roam through the fields of pumpkins. There are so many varieties to choose from! We have hay bales, scary cutouts, and a 5 acre corn maze! We also have fresh Brussels sprouts on the stalk, artichokes, corn stalks, and gourds.
**Pumpkins are priced by size, not weight.

Choosing your pumpkin:
There are two methods of choosing your pumpkin to carve. The first way is my favorite. As you stroll through the pumpkin patch a certain individual pumpkin will jump out at you! That's the ONE! The other method is to have a pattern or face in mind and look for a pumpkin that will work with your design. Usually a large stem makes a nice addition to the pumpkin.
Remember!. The more unusual the better!

  • Bring your camera! There are many fun photo spots!
  • Come spend the day by the California coastline and hand pick your Halloween pumpkin!
  • We are open every daily, 9 AM - 6 PM from October 1st through Halloween. After Halloween we will remain open on the honor system until Christmas.
  • We are dog friendly. We kindly ask that you keep them on a leash at all times and pick-up after them, if need be.
  • CASH OR CHECK ONLY PLEASE.
