Rio Theater
Climbing's greatest stories, stars with heart-thumping action, big laughs, and pure inspiration
Date: 11/09/2018 from 7:00pm to 9:30pm

(0 A November 2018) RioReelRock13.jpgREEL ROCK 13 delivers jaw-dropping action, soulful journeys and rollicking humor in a brand new collection of the year's best climbing films:

"The Valley of the Moon"
Wadi Rum, known as the Valley of the Moon, is a vast landscape of sandstone walls in the desert of Jordan. Hoping to lure international climbers, two Israelis team up with a local Bedouin guide to establish an 1,800foot route, eventually recruiting American climber Madaleine Sorkin to help achieve their dream. The Valley of the Moon explores the importance of climbing as a way to cross cultural barriers, build friendships and chase adventure in one of the most breathtaking regions on earth.

"Queen Maud Land"
A dream team of six elite climbers mount an expedition to one of the world's last great climbing frontiers: the remote frozen towers of Antarctica. Jimmy Chin and Conrad Anker tackle a new route on the 3,600-foot Ulvetanna; Savannah Cummins and Anna Pfaff summit the towering Holtanna; and Alex Honnold and Cedar Wright make a harrowing and hilarious blitz of 13 different spires spread across the ice field, including one pitch that Honnold calls "the scariest I have ever led."

"Age of Ondra"
Every so often an athlete comes along who redefines their sport. Adam Ondra, the 25yearold Czech crusher, is exploring a new realm of human potential in climbing. Late last year, he established a benchmark for the sport; a 5.15d in Norway he dubbed Silence (as in, drop the mic). On the heels of this ascent, we follow Adam from his home in the Czech Republic, across Europe to North America, as he innovates new training methods, establishes upper echelon first ascents, and attempts to be the first person to send 5.15 on the first try. Age of Ondra is a rare, intimate journey with one of the greatest athletes at the peak of his powers.

"Up to Speed"
When climbing was announced as part of the 2020 Olympics, it was a monumental occasion for the sport. But many climbers were shocked to learn that one of three combined events required to compete for a medal is... speed climbing. REEL ROCK correspondent Zachary Barr looks into this little-known and seldom practiced subdiscipline of the sport, and the role it will play in shaping climbing's future. Barr's journey from the U.S. to France (the birthplace of modern speed climbing) to South Asia culminates at an international competition in Moscow, where speed demons race up a 15meter wall in less than six seconds.

Date: The 2nd Sa of every month from 11:00am to 3:00pm
Ages: All Admission Fees: $2/person Kids under 1 are free

Every month we produce a 2nd Saturday on the Farm, a family event that focuses on a particular area of agriculture each month. Visitors can participate in the regular activities of the Ag History Project plus others related to the day's special focus. We host over 2,500 visitors each year at 2nd Saturday on the Farm.

We have created some unique interactive educational activities to help you have fun learning about past agricultural practices. What we like to call our "usual" activities include:

  • Wooden cow milking: we have life-size wooden cows with rubber teats that help you learn how to milk a cow.
  • Kid-driven tractor: we retrofitted a John Deere tractor so that anyone can learn to drive it. You sit in the seat and control the steering wheel while a trained volunteer stands on a platform to your right to controls the speed. We even have space for a parent or friend to stand to your left and enjoy the ride.
  • We are currently working on creating a stationary tractor that you can drive down a crop row and the computer screen in front of you displays how well you are handling the tractor.

State Park Pigeon Point Light Station
Date: Every Su, Fri and Sa at 10:00am
Ages: All

The Pigeon Point Lighthouse is currently under repair, but that doesn't mean that the First Order Fresnel Lens can't shine! The Fresnel lens, the original lighthouse beacon, will light up once again from its temporary home in the Visitor Center. As dusk settles, the 24 beams of light provide a dramatic glimpse of how the lighthouse once guided ships passing by this rocky coastline. Bring a flashlight and join us for a unique experience. For more information, call the park at (650) 879-2120 or go online to www.Parks.CA.gov/PigeonPoint. Event is free. Events made possible by Coastside State Parks Association and California State Parks.

* Please note the lighthouse will NOT be lit. The original lighthouse beacon, the First Order Fresnel lens, will be lit but in its temporary location inside the Visitor Center. The lighthouse is being repaired and is currently not accessible to the public.

"Six Characters In Search Of an Author," written by Luigi Pirandello, a Nobel Prize-winning playwright, and adapted by MarNae Taylor and Donna Johansen, takes place in a theatre where a rehearsal is happening, and six mysterious strangers appear. An intellectual comedy exploring other realities and relationships, the strangers explain that they are characters created for a play that the author never got around to writing. They are trapped in an eternal present unless they can persuade the theatre director to stage their drama. The director and actors resist but agree to hear their story.
