Bike Church
Families welcome...caution, best for teens and up
Date: The 2nd Fri of every month at 7:00pm

(0 Oct 2017) ThrillerRide2017.jpgIt's close to midnight and something evil's lurking In the dark
Under the moonlight you see a bike that almost stops Your heart
You try to scream (Bike Party!), but terror takes the sound before You make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes
You're paralyzed
'Cause this is thriller, THRILLER RIDE!
Friday the 13th, 7pm at the Bike Church!

...Darkness falls across the land
The 7pm hour is close at hand
Creatures ride in search of jams
To cruise through y'all's neighborhood!

Santa Cruz Bike Party is a mobile party for riders of all ages, experience levels, and types to meet, ride, and play together in the streets. Rides are 7-10 miles long with music and dance breaks along the way. Rides move at a relatively slow pace and no one is left behind. Each ride has a theme and riders are encouraged to wear costumes or decorate their bikes to fit the theme.

SC Bike Party starts and ends outside the Bike Church at 703 Pacific Ave downtown. The route is not the same every time, but each month organizers will post the route online ahead of time in case anyone misses the start and wants to catch up.

Once per month, all year long. We meet at 7pm every second Friday of the month. Rides usually leave about 7:15 and last about 2 hours.

The atmosphere of the SC Bike Party is fun, (zombie) friendly, welcoming, and safe. Our goal is to celebrate cycling and build community, not to cause conflict with car drivers. Please help us maintain a positive and safe atmosphere by keeping in mind the following guidelines:

Guidelines
-

Stay to the Right / Stop at Lights - This is not Critical Mass. Please stay to the right on 2-lane roads, or in the right lane on larger roads.
- Ride Straight - Please help avoid crashes by riding predictably, without any sudden turns or stops.
- Don't Hate - Please roll past any conflict that might present itself during the ride.
- Pack your Trash - Bike partiers aspire to leave party stops in better condition than we found them.
- Don't Get Smashed - Riding while inebriated poses a danger to yourself and others. Don't ruin the fun for everyone else by overdoing it.

Bring:
Lights - Rides are at night, so let's make sure to be visible.
Locks - No bikes have been stolen from the SC Bike Party, but during breaks better to be safe than sorry.
Layers - As we all know Santa Cruz evenings can get damp and chilly.
Water, snacks - Our stops are not always near stores, so best to bring what you need.
Tube, patch kit, pump, tools - The ride is unsupported; please come prepared.

Rio Theater
A selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed and incredibly inspiring documentary films
Date: 11/11/2017 at 7:00pm

Mountainfilm on Tour Santa Cruz

Mountainfilm on Tour brings a selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed and incredibly inspiring documentary films curated from the Mountainfilm festival held every Memorial Day weekend in Telluride, Colorado. The tour visits Santa Cruz at the Rio Theatre on November 11 with films that will explore the themes connected to Mountainfilm's mission: using the power of film, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world. A Mountainfilm presenter will guide the audience through the program providing insight on the films, filmmakers and subjects.

The show kicks off at 7 pm (Doors at 6 pm) Films announced 2 - 3 weeks in advance online at riotheatre.com. Check film listings if you are concerned about film ratings.

Denali's Raven (Renan Ozturk, 9 min.) Like a raven on an updraft, Leighan Falley soars above the glaciers and peaks of the Alaska Range with her daughter Skye strapped into the backseat of her de Havilland Beaver.

Ascend (Simon Perkins, 6 min.) language After being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Jon Wilson had his left leg fully amputated...

John Shocklee: A Fairy Tale (Ryan Heffernan, Grayson Schaffer, 7 min.) language  He lived with his parents until he was 26, took a minimum-wage guide position at the age of 39, and at 52 still hasn't landed what society would deem a real job.

Where the Wild Things Play (Krystle Wright, 4 min.) language, mature content  Friday night at the local watering hole and ... where the ladies at?

Lost in Light (Sriram Murali, 3 min.)  This film is about how light pollution changes what you see. -Henry, age 13

Zain's Summer: From Refugee to American (Joshua Seftel, 13 min.)
Zain's Summer depicts the sunny side of the refugee experience.

Conservation Generation (Kate Greenberg, 11 min.) "Young farmers" may seem like an oxymoron, but fortunately for all of us there's a young generation committed to agriculture.

Tatum Monod 2016 (Josh Berman, 4 min.) Tatum Monod is the embodiment of grace and steeze as she threads down pillowed slopes, steep spines and bold backcountry lines in this 2016 season edit.

120 Days: Tarpon Season (Ben Knight, Travis Rummel, 8 min.) Language  Even if you know nothing about fishing, and couldn't care less about it, you should still watch every fishing film ever made by the Felt Soul Media team.

Chocolate Spokes (Brendan Leonard, 6 min.) Language and mature content. "You're not investing in a bike; you're investing in a relationship."

Cowtown (Greg Kohs, 11 min.) The oldest weekly professional rodeo in the United States is a place called Cowtown, located in the unexpected eastern state of New Jersey...

The Time Travelers (Brendan Leonard, Forest Woodward, 24 min.) language. In 2016, members of the U.S. Men's Rafting team hatched an incredible challenge for themselves: to attempt to break the speed record for 277 miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon by rowing the entire stretch in only 34 hours.

La Langosta (Rush Sturges, Ben Marr, 2 min.)
Most people would consider sending a 70-foot waterfall pretty epic. Not Rafa Ortiz, who decides to ditch the kayak for a pool toy.

Owl Dance-Off Part 2 (Megan Lorenz, 2 min) Owl Dance-Off Part II is the much-anticipated follow-up to wildlife photographer Megan Lorenz's award-winning internet sensation Owl Dance-Off.

Date: The 2nd Sa of every month from 11:00am to 3:00pm
Ages: All Admission Fees: $2/person Kids under 1 are free

Every month we produce a 2nd Saturday on the Farm, a family event that focuses on a particular area of agriculture each month. Visitors can participate in the regular activities of the Ag History Project plus others related to the day's special focus. We host over 2,500 visitors each year at 2nd Saturday on the Farm.

We have created some unique interactive educational activities to help you have fun learning about past agricultural practices. What we like to call our "usual" activities include:

  • Wooden cow milking: we have life-size wooden cows with rubber teats that help you learn how to milk a cow.
  • Kid-driven tractor: we retrofitted a John Deere tractor so that anyone can learn to drive it. You sit in the seat and control the steering wheel while a trained volunteer stands on a platform to your right to controls the speed. We even have space for a parent or friend to stand to your left and enjoy the ride.
  • We are currently working on creating a stationary tractor that you can drive down a crop row and the computer screen in front of you displays how well you are handling the tractor.

Visit our Play & 'Inquiry Based Learning' preschool a block from West Cliff Drive on the iconic site of the previous Natural Bridges Elementary School.

We look forward to sharing our Mission, Vision, & Philosophy and to watching the children play, smile, & explore to their hearts content.

Our team of experienced & loving educators have been committed to, and working in the field of early childhood education for over three decades. We have studied with the many legends before us who have paved the way for children's rights and for preschool teacher advocacy. We carry this torch with a deep passion. Our love of child development and of building community drives our belief that all human beings can grow, learn, & prosper, and that we can all live peacefully in this world.

Informed by brain research, we understand that deep learning begins in the early years and it is during these years that compassion for self and others, growth mindsets for learning, and a respect for mother earth are cultivated.

Our team is dedicated to helping young learners develop a love for the environment, a sense of empathy, and the appropriate skills to navigate through any challenge! With these foundations, all academic learning can flourish.

We specialize in creating a caring and inclusive environment where families and children support one another. It is our hope that through the building of bridges between home, school, the community, and local and state agencies, we can create a ‘safe village' to raise healthy and happy children!

We invite you to share in our joy.

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

Elkhorn Slough Calendar Photography Contest

Calling all photographers!
The Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF) is excited to announce an open call for photos for use in our 2018 wall calendar! Images must be taken in the Elkhorn Slough watershed and may feature diverse subject matter including landscapes, wildlife, plants, and people.

Winning entries will be featured in our full-color, 8.5″ x 11″, 2018 Elkhorn Slough Foundation calendar. All proceeds of the calendar benefit ESF's work to conserve and restore the Elkhorn Slough and its watershed.

General guidelines:
Photos may feature any appropriate content, provided the photo is taken in the Elkhorn Slough watershed. The watershed encompasses Moss Landing Harbor, the slough channel and the Reserve, as well as the surrounding hills and upland habitats. We encourage you to submit diverse subject matter. Ideally photos will have been taken within the past two years. Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable.

Resolution:
Photographs must be submitted in digital format. For the contest, please only submit a small JPEG of your image NO LARGER THAN 1MB file size. If we select your image for possible use in the calendar, we will contact you to request a larger version suitable for printing (8.5″ x 11″ inches at a resolution of at least 300 dpi). If your photo is selected, but you are unable to supply it in at 300 dpi or higher, we may not be able to include your photo in the calendar.

(0 July 2017) ElkhornSloughPhotoContest2017.jpgImage selection:
Images selected by the Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF) will be featured in ESF's 2018 calendar. Photographers of selected images will receive photo credit and a copy of the calendar, but no monetary compensation.

During the selection process, the cover photo will be chosen by a public vote. Four photos will earn special prizes for their photographers: the top two entries will win a special tour of Elkhorn Slough and annual passes to the Reserve; two additional runners-up will win annual passes to the Reserve.

Entrant agrees to grant ESF irrevocable perpetual, nonexclusive license to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry in ESF's 2018 calendar as well as in other materials produced by the Elkhorn Slough Foundation. If your image is selected and includes identifiable people, signed photo releases will be required.

Photographers:
We encourage anyone with a great slough shot-amateur or professional- to enter. Each entrant may submit up to 5 photos. By submitting a photo, entrant agrees to all contest regulations.
ESF is now accepting photos! Deadline to enter is September 18, 2017.

Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony
Spend the afternoon listening to music performed by talented young musicians
Date: 11/12/2017 at 3:00pm
Admission Fees: free up to age 18. Adults $15, seniors $10, older students $5

(0 July 2017) SantaCruzCountyYouthSymphony.jpg

Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony will perform their Fall 2017 Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, at the UCSC Music Recital Hall. We can't think of a better way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon -- listening to music by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Shostakovich performed by our talented young musicians, ages 10 to 20. In particular, children will be inspired to see other kids their age performing at such a high level. No one will be disappointed!

Founded in 1966, the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony is made up of students from throughout Santa Cruz County who study and excel at their chosen instruments, from violin to cello, flute to trumpet, harp to percussion. Our mission is to foster a lifelong appreciation for classical music in the youth of Santa Cruz County and surrounding areas, with an emphasis on the beauty and value of the experience of playing and performing this music with others.

Music director and conductor Nathaniel Berman is one of those charismatic young conductors who knows how to work with young people and bring out the best in their musical abilities. The Fall Concert features 13-year-old soloist Laura Wang performing in a beautiful Mendelssohn Violin Concerto that many listeners will recognize. Beethoven's 5th Symphony shows off the orchestra's skill at conveying both grand and quiet moments. It's hard to choose, but my personal favorite on the program is the delightful set of dances that make up the Ballet Suite by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Admission to the concert is free for students up to age 18. Adults pay $15, seniors $10, older students just $5. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or through the Buy Tickets button on our website: http://www.sccys.org/concerts/

Open House visitors will be able to tour the property including the restored cocina (kitchen) and the Potter-Church Garden. The garden is a unique outdoor space originally created by then-owners Elizabeth and David Potter (1968 to 1972), in consultation with noted landscape architect Thomas Church.

Stroll over sand dunes, enjoy beautiful ocean views, and gain a unique opportunity to view a large colony of Northern elephant seals on this 3-mile, 2.5-hour self-guided trail! Visit the female elephant seals as they return to shore to molt, or shed their fur, in this annual excursion.  Additionally, young pups are still ashore from the winter breeding season. Layered clothing, closed-toes shoes, and rain/wind gear are strongly advised. Umbrellas and strollers are not permitted inside the dune area. Pets are not allowed in the park. Walk is free; day-use vehicle fee is $10. Entrance to the reserve for your self-guided walk requires a free permit that can be obtained at the entrance station, or the Visitor Center. Please contact the park at 650-879-2025 for further information.

If you require mobility assistance, you may request a volunteer-led equal access tour. You will board our accessible van and get a ride to our wheelchair-accessible boardwalk. A volunteer(s) will accompany you to the two seal-viewing decks, explain the Northern elephant seal natural history, the history of the park, and answer questions. Reservations are required. Please, allow a 2-week advance notice. The volunteer led tour is free, day-use vehicle fee is $10. Contact the park at 650-879-2033 or email Ano.EqualAccess@parks.ca.gov. Take a trip to the '20s, in all of their toe-tapping glory, with a modern twist on social and political comedy still relevant today. Based on a novel by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro, the 1920s' prohibition story features bootleggers, dowagers and chorus girls, with nods to marijuana legalization and the political influence of the 1 percent. The show, a hit on Broadway, is here to make Santa Cruz laugh out loud.

Music by George and Ira Gershwin, book by Joe DiPieto
