River Health Day
Volunteer and make a difference in the San Lorenzo River ecosystem!
The 2nd Sa of every month (Jul 23-Dec 8) from 9:30am to 12:30pm
Location: Santa Cruz Riverwalk, 107 Dakota Ave., Santa Cruz Map

Every second Saturday of the month you can join the Coastal Watershed Council in improving habitat conditions along the lower San Lorenzo River.

During these River Health Days, we will be planting and watering beneficial native seedlings, as well as removing invasive plants along the river to improve biodiversity and habitat complexity.

Events occur along the banks of the lower San Lorenzo River near the Santa Cruz Riverwalk. Equipment, gloves and refreshments are provided.

All ages and abilities welcome. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Santa Cruz Grows Seed Library is now open at the Museum of Art and History at 705 Front Street in downtown Santa Cruz. A second Collection will be established at the Live Oak Public Library in October.

Our mission has been to create a free urban seed project committed to increasing the capacity of our community to feed itself wholesome food by offering seeds and education. We imagine that the no-strings gift of garden seeds will encourage urban food production.


The Seed Library celebrates biodiversity through the time-honored tradition of seed saving, nurtures locally-adapted plant varieties, and fosters community resilience, self-reliance and a culture of sharing. It operates on the honor system. You become a member when you withdraw seeds to plant. You are not required to return seed.


We depend on you to treat the seed drawers with care. Read the guidelines in the Library binder. Don't take more than you need. Sign your seeds out. Endeavor to learn Seed Saving so that you can contribute. We need the relationship of Library to Public to be one of trust and reciprocity.


We encourage all members to learn basic seed saving techniques. Returned seed will allow us to keep the Library well-stocked. We've convened a Grow-Out Collective of experienced gardeners who will commit to growing certain varieties out for Library use. New members are always welcome.

First Friday is FREE! Come enjoy a free Stroller Strides class on the first Friday of each month. Stroller Strides meets at the Lighthouse on West Cliff Drive . Stroller Strides is a great way to get in shape, have fun with your baby/toddler, and meet other moms. The stroller workout combines a fitness walk with body toning intervals. 216-6314

Scotts Valley Educational Foundation
Ride to raise funds for SV Schools
Date: Every day (Mar 15-May 5) at 7:00am

The 2011 Mount Charlie Challenge Bike Ride is set for May 5 at Skypark. The Scotts Valley Educational Foundation event has raised nearly $200,000 for Scotts Valley schools. Reduced price entry is available through May 3, 11:59pm PDT.

Brief Description

• Check-in time is at 7:00 a.m. • Ride will begin at 8:00 a.m. •100-mile ride will venture into beautiful Santa Cruz County • 100K ride will climb Summit Road via Mt. Charlie Road • 50K ride will have smaller climbs • Bike helmets are REQUIRED • Registration fee includes raffle tickets, t-shirt and BBQ lunch • SAG support, staffed rest stops and live music for riders and their friends and families. Extra lunch tickets available day of event.


Scotts Valley Educational Foundation

The Scotts Valley Educational Foundation's mission is to raise money for the four public schools in Scotts Valley. Riders are encouraged - but not required - to obtain pledges for the ride by selling raffle tickets and soliciting corporate and personal sponsorships. The Scotts Valley Educational Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, making donations and sponsorships tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. A portion of the registration fees may also be tax-deductible.
