River Health Day
Volunteer and make a difference in the San Lorenzo River ecosystem!
The 2nd Sa of every month (Jul 23-Dec 8) from 9:30am to 12:30pm
Location: Santa Cruz Riverwalk, 107 Dakota Ave., Santa Cruz Map

Every second Saturday of the month you can join the Coastal Watershed Council in improving habitat conditions along the lower San Lorenzo River.

During these River Health Days, we will be planting and watering beneficial native seedlings, as well as removing invasive plants along the river to improve biodiversity and habitat complexity.

Events occur along the banks of the lower San Lorenzo River near the Santa Cruz Riverwalk. Equipment, gloves and refreshments are provided.

All ages and abilities welcome. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Bike Dojo
Learn the ins and outs of cycling in 5 days of riding in the Santa Cruz Mountains!
Date: Every Mon, Wed, Th and Fri (Jun 18-Aug 10) from 8:30pm to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-15 Admission Fees: $275/5 days

Enjoy 5 days mountain biking and exploring trails in Santa Cruz Mountains. This camp is for kids who want to learn mountain biking skills and is designed to teach riding skills, basic mechanics and very beginning racing skills in a fun, relaxed, and comfortable environment.

• Shifting, Braking, hovering
  and avoiding obstacles

• Picking a line and anticipation

• Going up and down hills

• Handling the terrain

As a special bonus Spokesman Bicycles is giving a workshop on bicycle maintenance and how to fix a flat.

 

This full day camp from 8:30-4:00 is for kids 7-12. There will be a minimum of 2 instructors every day. Camp Fee $275 for the week.

Santa Cruz Seed Library
New seed library: Bring seeds, Take seeds

The Santa Cruz Grows Seed Library is now open at the Museum of Art and History at 705 Front Street in downtown Santa Cruz. A second Collection will be established at the Live Oak Public Library in October.

Our mission has been to create a free urban seed project committed to increasing the capacity of our community to feed itself wholesome food by offering seeds and education. We imagine that the no-strings gift of garden seeds will encourage urban food production.


The Seed Library celebrates biodiversity through the time-honored tradition of seed saving, nurtures locally-adapted plant varieties, and fosters community resilience, self-reliance and a culture of sharing. It operates on the honor system. You become a member when you withdraw seeds to plant. You are not required to return seed.


We depend on you to treat the seed drawers with care. Read the guidelines in the Library binder. Don't take more than you need. Sign your seeds out. Endeavor to learn Seed Saving so that you can contribute. We need the relationship of Library to Public to be one of trust and reciprocity.


We encourage all members to learn basic seed saving techniques. Returned seed will allow us to keep the Library well-stocked. We've convened a Grow-Out Collective of experienced gardeners who will commit to growing certain varieties out for Library use. New members are always welcome.
