Every Fri (Mar 29-May 24) from 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Location: Capitola Mall, 1855 41st Ave., Capitola Map

(0 A 0 March) Library_STEAM.jpgJoin your Santa Cruz Public Libraries Friday afternoons to make something creative or make a new discovery from 2pm-4pm!

Your library is partnering with the Santa Cruz Children's Museum of Discovery to offer this weekly program. We will be in their Tinkerlab room. The program is free, and most suitable for 6-12 year olds.

Parents will need to remain available throughout the program, and will be helping children under 6. We provide materials to explore creativity, build things, make art and make discoveries. Usually they will be able to take their creations home. Sometimes they will be building something for that day only. Please join us and have some fun!

Program Description: The STEAM fields of study are all intertwined in nature. Children, at all levels, will benefit from exploring and experimenting with a variety of natural, recycled, and art materials. This program might use nature's mathematical patterns of geometry, symmetry, fractals, and Fibonacci spirals. Thematic science, art, technology, and engineering from MOD's exhibits might inspire this program's open-ended projects.

Steinbeck Festival
The 33rd Annual Steinbeck Festival is Old Home Week for Steinbeck lovers from across the world and down the street.
Date: Every day (May 3-May 5)

33rd Annual Steinbeck Festival - Theme is "HOME"

The 33rd Annual Steinbeck Festival is Old Home Week for Steinbeck lovers from across the world and down the street.

Join the National Steinbeck Center to celebrate its 33rd Annual Steinbeck Festival. The Festival Committee has declared “Home” as this year’s theme.

We will explore Steinbeck’s home – including Salinas, Cannery Row and the Pastures of Heaven. The Festival will feature talks, tours, films, food and the visual and performing arts.

"Houses and children and graves, that's home, Tom. Those are the things that hold a man down," said Ma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath.

John Steinbeck was born, raised and buried in the town of Salinas, California that is now home to the National Steinbeck Center. This home was a constant inspiration to him throughout his career as a writer and was the setting for many of his books and short stories.

The National Steinbeck Center presents its 33rd Annual Steinbeck Festival with tours and activities in locations that inspired John Steinbeck’s writing.  The festival is ‘Old Home Week’ for Steinbeck lovers from across the world and down the street, making it a a great opportunity for all to celebrate the communities of Salinas and beyond. This year's festival will include tours of Oldtown Salinas, the Salinas Rodeo and Ed Ricketts' lab on Cannery Row,as well as talks from various scholars. On Sunday, May 5, the Steinbeck Young Authors Awards Ceremony and a Community Free Day will take place at the National Steinbeck Center.

This is a great opportunity for all to celebrate the communities of Salinas and beyond. The 2013 Steinbeck Festival highlights those stories that can turn a row of houses into a Home.
