Date: Every day

Wilder Ranch Farm Animal Program Volunteers Needed!

Do you love Wilder Ranch and have a big heart for animals? Then do we have the opportunity for you! The Wilder Ranch Farm Animal Program is looking for volunteers to help feed and tend to the resident animals.

Families are welcome! Children between the ages of 6-18 are encouraged to volunteer as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian while volunteering.

This is a long term volunteer position as the animals grow very fond of their caretakers, with the minimum commitment being 6 months. There are several shifts available with morning and afternoon feedings.

Prior animal experience is a plus, but you will be thoroughly trained by Animal Program Coordinator Sunny Schacher on your duties as a caretaker, and introduced to the goats, sheep, chickens and other animals that reside on the ranch.

For more information, please contact Sunny at the
Wilder Ranch Visitor Center at (831) 426-0505.

If there is nobody available to pick up the phone, please leave a message for Sunny and she will return your call as soon as she is able.

Monterey State Historic Park
Date: Every Su, Mon, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm

It took a lot of donated cash, but Monterey's historic adobes are open to the public once more.

The Monterey State Historic Park adobes in downtown Monterey were largely closed to the public, along with walking tours, starting in 2007 because of budget cuts.

The tours will consist of the Custom House and its plaza, Pacific House Museum and First Brick House.

The adobes will be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Custom House was the primary port of entry on the Alta California coast and the spot where the American flag was raised in 1846, claiming the land for the United States. At one time, the Custom House presided over Mexico's primary port of entry on the Alta California coast. It was here that Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag in July 1846, claiming over 600,000 square miles of territory for the United States. This territory later was included in all or portions of the states of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, California and New Mexico.

This building is recognized as the oldest government building in California. It is State Historic Landmark #1.

It is $3 for the combined admission to Custom House and Pacific House. Walking tours, which last 50 minutes, are $5. Children 12 and younger are free.

Welcome to the Aromas Community Grange

A Grange, first and foremost, is a group of passionate people dedicated to serving their community, and thereby making the world a better place. Here in Aromas we are fortunate to also have a Grange Hall, a friendly, beautiful facility where Grange members and other community organizations can meet and gather for all kinds of events and activities.

At the state and national levels, the Grange is a political lobbying organization, steadfastly non-partisan and historically focused on protecting the rights of farmers and other small landholders and giving them a political voice. In California, the Aromas Grange is partnering with other action Granges in the state and the new State Grange leadership to help restore the larger Grange institution to its populist roots. Click here to learn more about the California State Grange.

In Aromas the Grange is at the heart of an active, thriving community. If you want to know what's going on in town, come join us and find out! We meet on the second Friday of every month, with a potluck dinner starting at 6:30, the business meeting starts at 7:15.

Volunteer and Bring Wilder Ranch History to Life!

Volunteers give heart and soul to the "Life on the Ranch" and other activities that make Wilder Ranch State Park such a fun, interesting, hands-on place to visit. Once a year, the park puts out a call for new volunteers to join their crew of "ranch-hands," who bring the history of this early Santa Cruz dairy ranch to life. Training begins Saturday, February 2, at 10:00am in the park's historic Meder Home. New volunteers learn to lead living history activities at the park.

Volunteer docents help with school group programs, present living history demonstrations, put on events like the annual Harvest Festival, help care for farm animals, lead hikes and building tours and host the visitor center. Wilder Ranch is especially seeking volunteers to help on weekdays with its "Ranch Kids Day" program, where school-children experience local history as they visit a host of hands-on stations led by docents.

The success of this program is based on the number of volunteers available to lead each activity.

Students come from local schools to try their hand at many early-day tasks including forging iron in the blacksmith shop, examining the workings of the water-powered Pelton Wheel, grooming the horses, churning butter from fresh cream, baking muffins and cookies and preparing vegetable soup on the wood burning oven, shucking corn to feed to the chickens, and washing laundry using bar soap, a grater, tubs, washboards, wringers and an old-fashioned iron. The day is an unforgettable lesson in local history for the kids.

Call (831) 426-0505 to sign up and become a docent at one of Santa Cruz's most treasured state parks!
