Loch Lomond Lake
Visit Loch Lomond Lake and go fishing or hike or picnic!
Date: Every day (Mar 1-Sep 30) from 6:00am to 8:00pm

After much anticipation, DFW came by on Friday and stocked the Loch with 2,000 lbs of trout (approximately 2,000 fish). This is the first time we've been stocked since the Loch was closed for the drought. Now is a great time to visit, as visitation is low early in the week and the fish are biting!

Loch Lomond Lake is nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the heart of Lompico and comprises an 87-acre lake stocked with Trout, Bluegills and Largemouth Bass. Twelve miles of trails wind their way across the woods and along two miles of lakeshore. One spectacular five mile loop goes along the lake to Deer Flat and to Highland Trail and up to the ridge where the view is worth every step. Fishing is always an option; just bring your pole. This 180 acres of recreation area offers picnic tables, a children's playground, nature center, interpretive walks with rangers and a lake side store where you can rent an electric or row boat, as well as pick up bait, tackle, fishing licenses, hot and cold drinks, and snacks.

Goal-Setting for Sanity: Easing the transition to adulthood

Suki Wessling
Get help setting up a goal-setting system with teens/pre-teens
Date: Every Sa (Jul 1-Sep 5) at 9:30am

(0 May 2017) Suki_BookGoalSettingGuideforTeens2.jpgGoal-Setting for Sanity: Easing the transition to adulthood 7pm. In this free parent workshop, writer and teacher Suki Wessling will lead parents through the preparatory steps of setting up a goal-setting system with their teens/pre-teens. Why goal-setting? We all know that raising teens can be stressful.

Academically, emotionally, and socially they are in a time of huge transition and growth. Parent/teen interactions can become minefields where teens inevitably feel that they are misunderstood, and parents find themselves pushing buttons they didn't know were there. Helping teens learn about goal-setting offers new vocabulary and strategies for avoiding or resolving these conflicts. In this workshop, we will identify problems in our households, talk about the basics of goal-setting, and explore how this approach can help improve parent/teen relationships during the time of transition. This workshop will be geared to both homeschooling and schooling families.

Held at The Art Factory, 9099 Soquel Drive #15, Aptos. Registration: Please register for this free workshop by using this linkhttp://bit.ly/2p42SRB or email  suki@sukiwessling.com for more information.

Love Apple Farms
Begin with healthy tomato plants
Date: Every day (Mar 27-May 29) from 10:00am to 5:00pm

Our tomato plant sale will begin on Sunday, March 27, 2016, and continue each Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday until May 29.

Wednesdays: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturdays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We will be selling our specialty tomato, pepper and eggplants at the usual location, which is 5311 Scots Valley Drive, Scotts Valley, CA. This is the home of Ivy's Porch, but we are not affiliated with them other than sharing a lovely garden setting.  If you have any questions about our plant sale, please email us at loveapplefarms@gmail.com or text your question to 831-588-3801.

For 2016 we will be pre-selling our plants and amendments. Click here to go to our pre-sale page (note we do not ship plants, this is for pick-up only on March 26. This date is pre-sale pick up ONLY. General opening day is the following day, Sunday, March 27. You will not be allowed to purchase plants on March 26 unless you have pre-ordered!).

NOTE:  We no longer carry Early Girl or Super Marzano plants. Monsanto purchased the rights to those varieties, and we cannot in good conscience support Monsanto-owned seeds. So try New Girl instead of Early Girl and try San Marzano or Plum Regal instead of Super Marzano.

Here is our 2016 variety list:

Grafted tomato varieties: Brandywine 'Sudduths,' San Marzano, Chocolate Stripes, Black Krim.

The Sign of the Seahorse, by Graeme Base is a wonderful tale about ecology set on the Great Barrier Reef. It is an incredible adventure about how a punk gold fish and a heroic lobster thwart the evil plans of the mobster grouper. Funny, adventurous, and told in rhyme.

Saratoga and the 1915 Pan Pacific Exposition-100 Year Centennial
Date: Every day
Ages: All

A new exhibit-Saratoga and the 1915 Pan Pacific Exposition-100 Year Centennial opens February 13 at the Saratoga History Museum.

The Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) was a world's fair held in San Francisco, in the United States, between February 20 and December 4 in 1915. The purpose was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal but the reality was to demonstrate that San Francisco had recovered from the 1906 earthquake.

The fair was constructed on a 635 site in San Francisco. It featured 11 Exhibit Palaces with over 40 countries and all the states participating. Among the exhibits at the Exposition was the C. P. Huntington, the first steam locomotive purchased by Southern Pacific Railroad; A telephone line was also established to New York so people across the continent could hear the Pacific Ocean. The Liberty Bell traveled by train on a nationwide tour from Pennsylvania to attend the exposition. Henry Ford had cars assembled every 10 minutes for 3 hours each day.

The exhibit will cover the PPIE exhibit and include information on Saratogans participating. The exhibit will run from February -June 26. Fair artifacts and ephemera will be on display.

City of Watsonville
Prepare early for stormy weather
Date: Every day (Oct 1-Apr 30)

With predictions of a wet winter here are some tips and resources to help you and your family prepare and stay safe.

Prepare: Maintain drainage channels and pipes on your property free of obstruction and debris. Keep an emergency supply with non-perishable food, water, manual can-opener, batteries, flashlights, battery-operated radio and a first-aid kit. Develop evacuation plans for your family.

Protect: If your property is in danger of flooding; sandbag areas where water may enter living spaces. Sandbags will be available at Fire station #1 located at 115 Second Street and at Home Depot. Come prepared to fill your own bags. If your property is in danger of flooding, contact PG&E to request that your power and natural gas be shut off. The City of Watsonville Emergency Operations will order evacuations if needed so listen to local commercial radio, television or social media. Seek shelter in the highest areas possible, avoid low-lying areas.

Pay Attention: After a flood, listen to the radio or check social media for emergency instructions. For your safety, avoid driving if possible and follow established procedures for property damage repairs. If repairs are needed, select a contractor who is licensed in his trade and is prepared to deal with post flood conditions.
