Date: Every day

Special Instructions: Call for hours

Dali17 Museum is Open

(A July) Dali_TimeSlithering.jpgDali17 Museum will open to the public on Friday, July 8 at 10am!

The new museum is a permanent exhibition of original etchings, mixed media, lithographs, and rare sculptures by one of the twentieth century's most celebrated surrealist artists, Salvador Dali.

This is the first permanent Dali exhibition on the West Coast and the second largest private collection in the United States. Previously, this collection has only been exhibited in Spain and Belgium.

will feature over 300 originals. Did you know that Monterey was the only place in the United States where Dali lived and worked? The exhibition will reintroduce Dali’s local history and will be the only museum to showcase photographs from Dali’s fundraiser Surrealistic Night at Del Monte.

(A July) Dali.jpgMonterey was the only place in the United States where Dali lived and worked. While the Nazis stormed across Europe, Dali and his wife Gala fled to the U.S. and in July 1941 found refuge at the Hotel Del Monte. While living in the Monterey area, he was heavily involved with the arts. Dali exhibited vintage sourced photographs as an early member of the Carmel Art Association and every May he participated as a juror for the local high school art competition.

Save Our Shores
Help clean up Cowells Beach
Date: Every 2 weeks on Sa from 9:00am to 11:00am

We are so excited to be teaming up with Haley Mander for the Cleanup Cowells Project. This cleanup program is in it's second successful year!  These cleanups would not be possible without donations from the Dream Inn.

Make sure you bring a filled reusable water bottle, sunglasses and a hat as well. We want to make sure everyone is staying hydrated! Any participants under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Cleanups happen RAIN OR SHINE! It is especially important to clean the beaches in the rainy weather, as all that trash is quickly getting washed into the Sanctuary!

Cleanups will run every other Sunday from 9-11am. Follow this successful program on Instagram (cleanupcowells)!

If you have any questions please contact cleanup@saveourshores.org.

Thank you for keeping our beaches clean and beautiful!

Jacobs Heart
We have 120 local families of children with cancer and other life-limiting disease in great need of adoption for the holidays.
Date: Every day (Nov 1-Dec 15) at 3:00pm

This year Jacob's Heart is serving more families than ever before. We are welcoming families of other life-threatening disease conditions to our circle of care. For some of these families, it will be the last holiday together. For all of them, the struggles of managing cancer of another serious, life-limiting illness is overwhelming.

We have 120 local families of children with cancer and other life-limiting disease in great need of adoption for the holidays.

And, you can shop online and your gifts will be delivered to Jacob's Heart, personally wrapped by our volunteers and then delivered directly to children and families at home or in the hospital.

Click the Amazon gift registry to shop online for teens and parents:

Or, shop on your own and deliver gifts to Jacob's Heart. Contact us and we will send you a family wishlist.

We are currently in need of the following items for our families over the holidays:

  • Diapers - all sizes

  • Gas and grocery gift cards

  • Blenders (new only!) for youth healthy cooking classes. We have special recipes to teach the children and their siblings to prepare healthy soups, salsas and smoothies. Go to our Amazon gift registry.

  • Target, Sears and K-Mart gift cards ($25 or $50) for teens with cancer or teen siblings

  • Restaurant gift cards so that exhausted parents can have a night out (local Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito or South Santa Clara restaurants or chain restaurants)

  • New spa robes for parents during long hospital stays and to use at Jacob's Heart's Camp Heart + Hands. (Target gift registry and Amazon Gift Registry).

Please call Daisy at 831-724-9100 or email: daisy@jacobsheart.org if you'd like to adopt a family (or 10 families). Click here to read a touching Adopt-a-Family story from Baby Matthew's mom.

adopt familyHere is how you can adopt a family of a child with cancer for the holidays.

1) Make a donation of $25 - $50 to send a gift card to a family for a holiday meal or a special gift. This is nice for dinner out for exhausted parents or to buy a family holiday meal.

2) Make a donation of:

  • $150 to adopt a child with cancer or another life-threatening illness and his/her parent(s) for the holidays,
  • $200 for a family of 2 or 3, or
  • $500 for family of 4 or more.

3) Shop the Jacob's Heart Target and/or Jacob's Heart Amazon Gift registry. Order gifts and gift cards online and the gifts will be delivered directly to us at Jacob's Heart.

We'll find out your adopted family's preferences, shop for them and send information along with a thank you note from the family. Please indicate Adopt-a-Family when you donate. Thank you!

donate

3) Adopt-a-Family and shop for their gifts. We will provide a gift wish list for each member of the family with their names, sizes and ages.  Call 831-724-9100 or email daisy@jacobsheart.org to adopt and shop.

Important dates:

  • Jacob's Heart volunteers will make every effort to provide you with a wish list for each member of your adopted family by November 15th to give you plenty of time to shop.
  • Please have gifts ready for delivery to the Jacob's Heart Family Center during the week of December 5th - December 9th.

presentsPlease let us know if you would be willing to deliver the gifts directly to your family; in some cases, we can arrange a home or hospital delivery. As you know, situations change daily for children with cancer, and we appreciate your flexibility and care with family privacy medical conditions.

Our children are treated at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford or UCSF Medical Center, so your help with a hospital delivery would be most appreciated if your adopted family has to spend the holidays in the hospital.

We can't thank you enough for your kind heart and caring support.

May these holidays be truly blessed.

The story begins when the Conductors calls "All aboard" and punches children's golden tickets. Little faces will peer out the train's windows as we pull out of the station on our way to the North Pole.  Each guests will hear the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack as the story reading begins and the book's characters come to life. Dancing chefs will serve hot cocoa and cookies to all riders in a merry fashion as the doubting hobo wanders through the train.

Polar_3_-_Canon_047_800The train stops where children will behold the magic of the North Pole from their warm train seats. With a jolly "Ho, ho, ho" Santa waves to everyone and climbs aboard where he will greet each child and present them with the iconic silver sleigh bell (only believers can hear its ringing). Christmas carols will be sung as we return back to the station after a memorable ride that sets the tone for the whole holiday season. Join us in this annual event sure to become one of your family's treasured traditions.

2:00pm / Work Day

What kind of activities will you do? The farm projects change every week and each day with the passing of the season, but these tips will help prepare you:

  • Parking is behind the Roadside Barn for you and the other farm hands.
  • Check-in at the Roadside Barn where everybody will join up to start.
  • Please leave dogs at home. (We love them too, but this isn't a good event for them!)
  • For comfort bring bottles of water to stay hydrated, layers of clothing to adapt to unpredictable weather, sunscreen and sun hats to shade you, and wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet!
  • To pitch in, bring work gloves to protect your hands, gardening tools for working the soil and cutting plants, and plenty of enthusiasm! (We have backup gloves and tools in case you forget, so don't fret!

4:00pm / Optional Farm Tour ~ Cost is $12-20 per person.

Our tour discusses our sustainable agricultural practices, ranges over the entire 27 acres of the farm, takes folks in to peek at the historic Steele Ranch buildings, visits the goats, cows, chickens, and pigs and when possible, includes sampling from the fields.

6:00pm / Potluck Dinner followed by music and dancing!

Cost for the dance is $12-20 per person on a sliding scale; everyone contributes what they can! PLEASE NOTE THAT AN RSVP is recommended but not required and is helpful for our own planning purposes. Nobody will be turned away.

The potluck brings several dozen people out, each sporting a dish they've cooked up to share.

The dance features the County Line Pickers (Jim Davies, bass; Joni Davies, guitar; Josh Lane, mandolin; Ken Clarkson, banjo; Jon Young and Nancy Vail, fiddles) with caller Andy Wilson to lead the dosey-does and more!

To encourage a friendly family atmosphere and encourage safe driving out on Hwy 1, the potluck and barn dance are alcohol-free events. Please register using the Sign Up button at the top of this page and note that we can only accommodate groups of 10 or less.  Our office is closed on Saturday and Sunday so the latest RSVP we can accept is the Friday before 3pm the day before the barn dance.

Come learn more about Argentine Hippolyte Bouchard's raid in 1818 when he attacked the City of Monterey, the only land and sea battle ever to occur on the West Coast of! the United States. After the ceremony, drive down the hill (or walk it!) to have lunch on Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf

The City of Monterey, in partnership with the Old Monterey Foundation, is presenting this free community event to kick off a series of events over the next years that celebrate Monterey's rich past.   Learn more about the early military history of the area.  Hear Monterey Mayor Clyde Roberson proclaim its upcoming celebration of the Bicentennial of the Battle of Monterey.  Dennis Copeland, City of Monterey's Manager of Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives, will provide a brief military history of the very early period of the Lower Presidio Historic Park.  See the Spanish flag lowered and the Argentine flag hoisted at the Bouchard Monument. Cheer or Boo as the "pirates" capture El Castillo and deploy to t! he Royal Presidio Chapel, now known as San Carlos Cathedral.  It was built in 1794 and is the only remaining landmark from the time of the battle.  Meet Argentine Captain Bouchard and his opponent Royal Governor Sola.  Be the first to know about the plans for the Bicentennial of the Battle of Monterey and the initial planning for the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of Monterey coming in 2020. Bring the whole family and participate in all of the fun and pageantry on Saturday, November 19th!

From a reviewer: 9/12/2016

"I've been to botanical gardens around the US and other countries, and this one is truly world class. I can't believe I've lived here for years and had never gone. I was worried that there might not be many things blooming since it's September, but there were so many amazing flowers packed together, that I can't even imagine what it's like in the spring. The ratio of plants-to-walking is really excellent. Every square foot of the garden seems carefully planned to pack in more wonderful things to see, all meticulously labeled and growing vigorously."
