Monterey Bay Birding Festival
Call for Volunteers
Date: Every day (Apr 28-Oct 2)

The 2016 Monterey Bay Birding Festival, taking place September 23 - 25, 2016, will offer exciting new field trips, workshops, speakers, youth, and community events. The Festival's energetic Planning Committee has already hit the ground running to make this the best festival yet!

Many dedicated volunteers and docents help with the festival each year. Once again, they need your help with a diverse set of volunteer opportunities. In particular, they have three important coordinator positions that need a leader to participate in the advance festival planning, including Vendor Coordinator, Facilities Coordinator, and Co-Festival Director.

Detailed information for each of these positions is available so if you are interested in one of these or any other position, please send an email to montereybaybirdingfestival@gmail.com. It might seem daunting, but don't worry because you'll be working with a seasoned group of festival coordinators who will help make your area of responsibility a success. For more information about the Monterey Bay Birding Festival please visit the website at http://montereybaybirding.org/. Thank you!

Loch Lomond Lake
Visit Loch Lomond Lake and go fishing or hike or picnic!
Date: Every day (Mar 1-Sep 30) from 6:00am to 8:00pm

After much anticipation, DFW came by on Friday and stocked the Loch with 2,000 lbs of trout (approximately 2,000 fish). This is the first time we've been stocked since the Loch was closed for the drought. Now is a great time to visit, as visitation is low early in the week and the fish are biting!

Loch Lomond Lake is nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the heart of Lompico and comprises an 87-acre lake stocked with Trout, Bluegills and Largemouth Bass. Twelve miles of trails wind their way across the woods and along two miles of lakeshore. One spectacular five mile loop goes along the lake to Deer Flat and to Highland Trail and up to the ridge where the view is worth every step. Fishing is always an option; just bring your pole. This 180 acres of recreation area offers picnic tables, a children's playground, nature center, interpretive walks with rangers and a lake side store where you can rent an electric or row boat, as well as pick up bait, tackle, fishing licenses, hot and cold drinks, and snacks.

The exhibition will be the largest collection of Dali’s art on the West Coast and will feature over 300 originals.
Date: Every day

Special Instructions: Call for hours

Dali17 Museum is Open

(A July) Dali_TimeSlithering.jpgDali17 Museum will open to the public on Friday, July 8 at 10am!

The new museum is a permanent exhibition of original etchings, mixed media, lithographs, and rare sculptures by one of the twentieth century's most celebrated surrealist artists, Salvador Dali.

This is the first permanent Dali exhibition on the West Coast and the second largest private collection in the United States. Previously, this collection has only been exhibited in Spain and Belgium.

will feature over 300 originals. Did you know that Monterey was the only place in the United States where Dali lived and worked? The exhibition will reintroduce Dali’s local history and will be the only museum to showcase photographs from Dali’s fundraiser Surrealistic Night at Del Monte.

(A July) Dali.jpgMonterey was the only place in the United States where Dali lived and worked. While the Nazis stormed across Europe, Dali and his wife Gala fled to the U.S. and in July 1941 found refuge at the Hotel Del Monte. While living in the Monterey area, he was heavily involved with the arts. Dali exhibited vintage sourced photographs as an early member of the Carmel Art Association and every May he participated as a juror for the local high school art competition.

Chantey Singing in San Francisco

For over thirty years sea music enthusiasts have gathered on the historic ships C. A. Thayer and Balclutha to sing chanteys and other sea songs. This free event, which takes place the first Saturday of every month, has garnered a loyal following, drawing 80 to 200 people monthly.

Listen to a four minute audio file about sea chanteys. (MP3, 04:17, 3.9MB)

During the golden age of chanteying, 1840-1860, the work songs of sailors were used aboard ship to help coordinate shipboard jobs. Jobs such as hauling on lines to raise sails, turning the capstan (an iron winch) to weigh (raise) anchor and manning the ship's pumps required sailors to work together in rhythm.

Influenced by Irish, Scottish, English, French, African American and West Indian traditions, chanteys also served to lift spirits during this often monotonous and back-breaking work. The songs were sung by call and response: a chanteyman sang verses and the crew responded with the chorus between each verse. The work was performed while singing the choruses. The chanteyman's verses gave the crew a few seconds to rest.

There are chanteys that tell of San Francisco and its dangerous "Barbary Coast," one of the most infamous of all port cities. California history comes alive in chanteys warning sailors to steer clear of notorious San Francisco crimps Shanghai Brown and Larry Marr, who ran saloons and kidnapped many men to crew ships.

California-based chanteys describe life aboard "hell ships," the dangers of rounding Cape Horn, cruel ship officers, the joys and curse of drink and hopes for riches during the gold rush.

Goal-Setting for Sanity: Easing the transition to adulthood

Suki Wessling
Get help setting up a goal-setting system with teens/pre-teens
Date: Every Sa (Jul 1-Sep 5) at 9:30am

(0 May 2017) Suki_BookGoalSettingGuideforTeens2.jpgGoal-Setting for Sanity: Easing the transition to adulthood 7pm. In this free parent workshop, writer and teacher Suki Wessling will lead parents through the preparatory steps of setting up a goal-setting system with their teens/pre-teens. Why goal-setting? We all know that raising teens can be stressful.

Academically, emotionally, and socially they are in a time of huge transition and growth. Parent/teen interactions can become minefields where teens inevitably feel that they are misunderstood, and parents find themselves pushing buttons they didn't know were there. Helping teens learn about goal-setting offers new vocabulary and strategies for avoiding or resolving these conflicts. In this workshop, we will identify problems in our households, talk about the basics of goal-setting, and explore how this approach can help improve parent/teen relationships during the time of transition. This workshop will be geared to both homeschooling and schooling families.

Held at The Art Factory, 9099 Soquel Drive #15, Aptos. Registration: Please register for this free workshop by using this linkhttp://bit.ly/2p42SRB or email  suki@sukiwessling.com for more information.

Help clean up Cowells Beach
Date: Every 2 weeks on Sa from 9:00am to 11:00am

We are so excited to be teaming up with Haley Mander for the Cleanup Cowells Project. This cleanup program is in it's second successful year!  These cleanups would not be possible without donations from the Dream Inn.

Make sure you bring a filled reusable water bottle, sunglasses and a hat as well. We want to make sure everyone is staying hydrated! Any participants under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Cleanups happen RAIN OR SHINE! It is especially important to clean the beaches in the rainy weather, as all that trash is quickly getting washed into the Sanctuary!

Cleanups will run every other Sunday from 9-11am. Follow this successful program on Instagram (cleanupcowells)!

If you have any questions please contact cleanup@saveourshores.org.

Thank you for keeping our beaches clean and beautiful!
