Santa Cruz County Parks
Melissa West's work explores the fine line between comfort and menace in our most common stories and shared experiences.
Date: Every Mon, Tues, Wed, Th and Fri (Aug 8-Sep 27)

(0 Aug 2017) SCCParks_BlockPrints.jpgMelissa West's linolium block prints will be on exhibition August 15 through mid-October at the Simpkins Family Swim Center/Parks Dept. offices, 979 17th Ave. in Live Oak.

Melissa West's work explores the fine line between comfort and menace in our most common stories and shared experiences. The place where they meet is sometimes fraught with tension, some-times filled with magic. West's prints depict the characters who populate myths, legends, and fairy tales, but transplanted into a modern or neutral setting. The tension thus created helps viewers see these familiar tales anew, and think about the ways they remain relevant to the modern world.

Many of the prints in this show were originally created as illustrations for the book "Witchcraft: A Handbook of Magic Spells and Potions", written by Anastasia Greywolf and published by Wellfleet Press, 2016.

Rodoni Farms
Great local place to pick your pumpkin right from the field and have fun in the corn maze!
Date: Every day (Sep 22-Oct 31)

Special Instructions: 4 miles North of Santa Cruz, California on Hwy. 1

Pumpkins are HERE!!

(Special Event Images / Graphics) RodoniFarm_photo.jpg

Pumpkins and fun are what it's all about! Come roam through the fields of pumpkins. There are so many varieties to choose from! We have hay bales, scary cutouts, and a 5 acre corn maze! We also have fresh Brussels sprouts on the stalk, artichokes, corn stalks, and gourds.
**Pumpkins are priced by size, not weight.

Choosing your pumpkin:
There are two methods of choosing your pumpkin to carve. The first way is my favorite. As you stroll through the pumpkin patch a certain individual pumpkin will jump out at you! That's the ONE! The other method is to have a pattern or face in mind and look for a pumpkin that will work with your design. Usually a large stem makes a nice addition to the pumpkin.
Remember!. The more unusual the better!

  • Bring your camera! There are many fun photo spots!
  • Come spend the day by the California coastline and hand pick your Halloween pumpkin!
  • We are open every daily, 9 AM - 6 PM from October 1st through Halloween. After Halloween we will remain open on the honor system until Christmas.
  • We are dog friendly. We kindly ask that you keep them on a leash at all times and pick-up after them, if need be.
  • CASH OR CHECK ONLY PLEASE.

From a reviewer: 9/12/2016

"I've been to botanical gardens around the US and other countries, and this one is truly world class. I can't believe I've lived here for years and had never gone. I was worried that there might not be many things blooming since it's September, but there were so many amazing flowers packed together, that I can't even imagine what it's like in the spring. The ratio of plants-to-walking is really excellent. Every square foot of the garden seems carefully planned to pack in more wonderful things to see, all meticulously labeled and growing vigorously."

Elkhorn Slough Calendar Photography Contest

Calling all photographers!
The Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF) is excited to announce an open call for photos for use in our 2018 wall calendar! Images must be taken in the Elkhorn Slough watershed and may feature diverse subject matter including landscapes, wildlife, plants, and people.

Winning entries will be featured in our full-color, 8.5″ x 11″, 2018 Elkhorn Slough Foundation calendar. All proceeds of the calendar benefit ESF's work to conserve and restore the Elkhorn Slough and its watershed.

General guidelines:
Photos may feature any appropriate content, provided the photo is taken in the Elkhorn Slough watershed. The watershed encompasses Moss Landing Harbor, the slough channel and the Reserve, as well as the surrounding hills and upland habitats. We encourage you to submit diverse subject matter. Ideally photos will have been taken within the past two years. Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable.

Resolution:
Photographs must be submitted in digital format. For the contest, please only submit a small JPEG of your image NO LARGER THAN 1MB file size. If we select your image for possible use in the calendar, we will contact you to request a larger version suitable for printing (8.5″ x 11″ inches at a resolution of at least 300 dpi). If your photo is selected, but you are unable to supply it in at 300 dpi or higher, we may not be able to include your photo in the calendar.

(0 July 2017) ElkhornSloughPhotoContest2017.jpgImage selection:
Images selected by the Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF) will be featured in ESF's 2018 calendar. Photographers of selected images will receive photo credit and a copy of the calendar, but no monetary compensation.

During the selection process, the cover photo will be chosen by a public vote. Four photos will earn special prizes for their photographers: the top two entries will win a special tour of Elkhorn Slough and annual passes to the Reserve; two additional runners-up will win annual passes to the Reserve.

Entrant agrees to grant ESF irrevocable perpetual, nonexclusive license to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry in ESF's 2018 calendar as well as in other materials produced by the Elkhorn Slough Foundation. If your image is selected and includes identifiable people, signed photo releases will be required.

Photographers:
We encourage anyone with a great slough shot-amateur or professional- to enter. Each entrant may submit up to 5 photos. By submitting a photo, entrant agrees to all contest regulations.
ESF is now accepting photos! Deadline to enter is September 18, 2017.

A very personal narrative on immigration, overcoming cultural shock and assimilating into the U.S.
Date: 09/22/2017 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Hands on History: An Immigration Story with Joaquín Barreto

Joaquín Barreto, author of El Otro Lado (The Other Side) An Immigration Story, will play some live music and invite you to share your immigration story and experience. Joaquin will speak about assimilation, discrimination, living in the US with a label of “illegal alien” and the consequences of that.

About the book and author: El Otro Lado is a very personal narrative on immigration, overcoming cultural shock and assimilating into the U.S. Through music and stories, the author takes you through various stages of transition, from country to country, from childhood to young adulthood and more.

The descriptions of the rural Mexico are felt by the reader, the scenes, the scents, the traditions and culture that seem to evaporate as new traditions are adopted with the false assumption of becoming more American.

Based on the 20th Century Fox Picture, and set in 1979, this musical comedy of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical and bigoted boss, Franklin Hart, Jr. In a turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee manage to kidnap Hart and trap him in his own house, while assuming control of his department. The women work together to help improve both their personal and professional situations. But just how long can they keep him tied up?

State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola
