State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

From a reviewer: 9/12/2016

"I've been to botanical gardens around the US and other countries, and this one is truly world class. I can't believe I've lived here for years and had never gone. I was worried that there might not be many things blooming since it's September, but there were so many amazing flowers packed together, that I can't even imagine what it's like in the spring. The ratio of plants-to-walking is really excellent. Every square foot of the garden seems carefully planned to pack in more wonderful things to see, all meticulously labeled and growing vigorously."

Pumpkins are HERE!!

(Special Event Images / Graphics) RodoniFarm_photo.jpg

Pumpkins and fun are what it's all about! Come roam through the fields of pumpkins. There are so many varieties to choose from! We have hay bales, scary cutouts, and a 5 acre corn maze! We also have fresh Brussels sprouts on the stalk, artichokes, corn stalks, and gourds.
**Pumpkins are priced by size, not weight.

Choosing your pumpkin:
There are two methods of choosing your pumpkin to carve. The first way is my favorite. As you stroll through the pumpkin patch a certain individual pumpkin will jump out at you! That's the ONE! The other method is to have a pattern or face in mind and look for a pumpkin that will work with your design. Usually a large stem makes a nice addition to the pumpkin.
Remember!. The more unusual the better!

  • Bring your camera! There are many fun photo spots!
  • Come spend the day by the California coastline and hand pick your Halloween pumpkin!
  • We are open every daily, 9 AM - 6 PM from October 1st through Halloween. After Halloween we will remain open on the honor system until Christmas.
  • We are dog friendly. We kindly ask that you keep them on a leash at all times and pick-up after them, if need be.

Camp, hike the mountains of the south coast, repose in flowing streams, hunt for jade and jasper, surf, boogie board, and play .
Date: Every day (Oct 2-Oct 5)
Ages: Ages 3 and up Admission Fees: $40/day

Big Sur Camping Trip!
We live in some very wonderful environments on the central and north coasts of California. A wilderness that is right in our back yard is Big Sur. 2 ½ hours away we are thrust into coast line perched over a deep clear sea. It seems we are thrust back in time to early survivalist USA. There are several camp sites that are right on the cliffs that we can reserve for our trek to this most awesome experience.

Our objective will be to camp, hike the mountains of the south coast, repose in flowing streams, hunt for jade and jasper, surf, boogie board, and play in the tide pools of this beautiful water space.  Every day we will play and divers will hunt for ingredients for our evening gourmet meal.  This is a Family Style Adventure (FSA) in which everyone gets into the logistics of the outing to help it
run -the essence of synergy in which the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

(0 Sept 2017) PlaskettCreek_Dennis.jpgWe have reserved the Plasket Creek Camp Ground and we will set up the kitchen. You will provide your camping gear, eating utensils & wine glass, ingredients for your food groups meal, and energy to prepare the meal assignment plus clean-up.

Being part of the venture is special and you may learn new ways to prepare a camping gustatory experience. At the end of the evening we will fire up the Indian Sweat lodge to envelop ourselves in the ultimate Big Sur experience.

Highland Rogue Productions
Immerse yourself in the sites, sounds, and the tastes of an ancient Scottish culture
Date: 10/07/2017 from 10:00am to 6:00pm
Admission Fees: $0 - $17

It is with great honor and anticipation that I invite you to join us as the clans once again gather in the highlands of the Santa Cruz Mountains!

(AAA July 2015) PipesandDrums.jpgIn 1830 Isaac Graham a mountain man of Scottish descent settled here and soon after the Mexican authorities named his wild settlement Roaring Camp. In 1842 near this very location Graham founded a distillery and the first saw mill west of the Mississippi. Fortunately the Big Trees here were spared the woodsman's axe and thus we are fortunate to have this beautiful and befitting location to celebrate and carry on the Scottish highland traditions of our ancient Celtic culture.

This year's gathering and games will feature all the wonderful activities you have come to know and love, the details of which you will find on this website. So bring your family and friends and for a day immerse yourself in the sites, the sounds, and the taste of an ancient culture kept alive in the hearts and by the hands of its proud descendants.

In Celebration of the New Abbott Square, SCPL is bringing storytimes outside to this fantastic new community space.

English language storytimes will be held at 10:00am on the last Thursday of the month in June, July, and August, replacing our regular weekly Thursday storytime at the Downtown Branch for that week. Those Thursdays fall on June 29th, July 27th, and August 31st.

We'll also have Spanish storytimes at 5:30pm on the second Monday of the month in July, August, and September. These events will replace our weekly Live Oak Branch storytime, Cuentame un Cuento for that week. These Mondays fall on July 10th, August 14th, and September 11th.

Cuentame un Cuento será presentado en Abbott Square el segundo lunes del mes en julio, agosto y septiembre.

Abbott Square is located at 118 Cooper Street, next to the Santa Cruz Musuem of Art and History. We hope you'll join us.

Family storytimes are a great way to bring people together while promoting literacy for young children. The library system holds regular weekly storytimes for toddlers and preschool age children, as well as a weekly family storytime in Spanish. Visit santacruzpl.org/calendar for locations and times.

Date: The 2nd Sa of every month from 11:00am to 3:00pm
Ages: All Admission Fees: $2/person Kids under 1 are free

Every month we produce a 2nd Saturday on the Farm, a family event that focuses on a particular area of agriculture each month. Visitors can participate in the regular activities of the Ag History Project plus others related to the day's special focus. We host over 2,500 visitors each year at 2nd Saturday on the Farm.

We have created some unique interactive educational activities to help you have fun learning about past agricultural practices. What we like to call our "usual" activities include:

  • Wooden cow milking: we have life-size wooden cows with rubber teats that help you learn how to milk a cow.
  • Kid-driven tractor: we retrofitted a John Deere tractor so that anyone can learn to drive it. You sit in the seat and control the steering wheel while a trained volunteer stands on a platform to your right to controls the speed. We even have space for a parent or friend to stand to your left and enjoy the ride.
  • We are currently working on creating a stationary tractor that you can drive down a crop row and the computer screen in front of you displays how well you are handling the tractor.

Finish Line Productions
A swim, bike and run course for kids!
Date: 10/15/2017

SuperKid Triathlon and Splash & Dash

SuperKid has always been about building strong bodies and healthy kids. This means getting them off the couch, away from the TV, phones, video games, and outside for some healthy physical activity. It doesn't matter if your child is already an athlete or is just starting to engage in sports and outdoor activity. This is a great event for the whole family and gives your children the opportunity to be active and healthy. With a swim, bike and run course, real transition area, body markings and fun prizes for participants, you can help your child gain the self esteem that comes from doing their personal best. Not to mention a cool finisher medal and matching shirt.

Once final results are posted you'll be able to download an official finisher certificate with event info, age group, total time and place to remember the event.

THE BIKE COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR FAT TIRE, MOUNTAIN BIKES, AND CYCLECROSS BIKES. No road bikes or skinny tires!

For 2017 we will also be participating in USAT's Splash & Dash Series, just swim and bike, for ages 7 - 15. There will be one Splash & Dash wave start for each course configuration. See Wave Starts for course times.

Boo at the Zoo 2017

(A A Sep 16) BooZooHalloween.jpg

Dress up in costume for one of San Francisco Zoo & Garden's most popular family Halloween events, "Boo at the Zoo", on Saturday and Sunday, October 28 & 29

Trick-or-treat at multiple stations throughout the Zoo and watch animals gobble up gourds and enjoy Halloween-themed enrichment treats during the Pumpkin Stomp & Chomp.  Brave the Haunted Nature Trail, decorated especially for the occasion with not-so-scary ghosts, goblins and more!  Have a creepy, crawly critter adventure at the Insect Zoo, teaming with more than a thousand multi-legged bugs.

The last weekend of October is also the final opportunity to catch "ZOOtoberFest" with entertainment for all ages.  Located near the Lion Fountain, "Harvest Hallow" houses San Francisco's largest Hay Maze, a 5,000-square-foot structure built with 600 bales of straw!  There's ample seating, pumpkins, and festive fall décor for a family photo op!

The "Zoo Brew Haus" at The Depot Grill is pouring a great selection of specialty beers in a keepsake mug.  Choose from a full menu of German-inspired dishes, like beer-braised bratwurst with Guinness mustard and Sauerkraut!  During lunch, dine to the upbeat sounds of a live band playing traditional European polka music. You might even want to get up and dance!  Grab a seat and stay for three musical performances from 12:00 am to 3:00 pm.

All activities are free with paid admission to San Francisco Zoo & Gardens.
