"California Powder Works was the first American explosive powder manufacturing company west of the Rocky Mountains. When the outbreak of the Civil War cut off supplies of gunpowder to California's mining and road-building industries, a local manufacturer was needed. Originally located near Santa Cruz, California, the company was incorporated in 1861 and began manufacturing gunpowder in May 1864. For fifty years, it was a major employer in the county, employing between 150 and 275 men. The powder works was located on a flat adjacent to the San Lorenzo River, three miles upstream of Santa Cruz " Wikipedia

Elkhorn Slough
Elkhorn Slough Calendar Photography Contest
Date: Every day (Apr 22-Nov 18)
Admission Fees: (Fee event: ESF Non-member $40/Member $35)

Elkhorn Slough Calendar Photography Contest

Calling all photographers!
The Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF) is excited to announce an open call for photos for use in our 2018 wall calendar! Images must be taken in the Elkhorn Slough watershed and may feature diverse subject matter including landscapes, wildlife, plants, and people.

Winning entries will be featured in our full-color, 8.5″ x 11″, 2018 Elkhorn Slough Foundation calendar. All proceeds of the calendar benefit ESF's work to conserve and restore the Elkhorn Slough and its watershed.

General guidelines:
Photos may feature any appropriate content, provided the photo is taken in the Elkhorn Slough watershed. The watershed encompasses Moss Landing Harbor, the slough channel and the Reserve, as well as the surrounding hills and upland habitats. We encourage you to submit diverse subject matter. Ideally photos will have been taken within the past two years. Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable.

Resolution:
Photographs must be submitted in digital format. For the contest, please only submit a small JPEG of your image NO LARGER THAN 1MB file size. If we select your image for possible use in the calendar, we will contact you to request a larger version suitable for printing (8.5″ x 11″ inches at a resolution of at least 300 dpi). If your photo is selected, but you are unable to supply it in at 300 dpi or higher, we may not be able to include your photo in the calendar.

(0 July 2017) ElkhornSloughPhotoContest2017.jpgImage selection:
Images selected by the Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF) will be featured in ESF's 2018 calendar. Photographers of selected images will receive photo credit and a copy of the calendar, but no monetary compensation.

During the selection process, the cover photo will be chosen by a public vote. Four photos will earn special prizes for their photographers: the top two entries will win a special tour of Elkhorn Slough and annual passes to the Reserve; two additional runners-up will win annual passes to the Reserve.

Entrant agrees to grant ESF irrevocable perpetual, nonexclusive license to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry in ESF's 2018 calendar as well as in other materials produced by the Elkhorn Slough Foundation. If your image is selected and includes identifiable people, signed photo releases will be required.

Photographers:
We encourage anyone with a great slough shot-amateur or professional- to enter. Each entrant may submit up to 5 photos. By submitting a photo, entrant agrees to all contest regulations.
ESF is now accepting photos! Deadline to enter is September 18, 2017.

From a reviewer: 9/12/2016

"I've been to botanical gardens around the US and other countries, and this one is truly world class. I can't believe I've lived here for years and had never gone. I was worried that there might not be many things blooming since it's September, but there were so many amazing flowers packed together, that I can't even imagine what it's like in the spring. The ratio of plants-to-walking is really excellent. Every square foot of the garden seems carefully planned to pack in more wonderful things to see, all meticulously labeled and growing vigorously."

State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

On February 11, 2016, the SCPL Facilities Financing Authority placed a $67 million bond measure (later designated Measure S) on the June, 2016 ballot. With 70% approval, voters agreed to fund Measure S. These funds are intended to improve each and every facility in the SCPL system, with new buildings slated for Capitola and Felton and a major renovation or new build under consideration for Downtown Santa Cruz.

We encourage you to keep up to date with these building projects and to participate in the planning process. These are YOUR libraries, so lets imagine the future together.

Pumpkins are HERE!!

(Special Event Images / Graphics) RodoniFarm_photo.jpg

Pumpkins and fun are what it's all about! Come roam through the fields of pumpkins. There are so many varieties to choose from! We have hay bales, scary cutouts, and a 5 acre corn maze! We also have fresh Brussels sprouts on the stalk, artichokes, corn stalks, and gourds.
**Pumpkins are priced by size, not weight.

Choosing your pumpkin:
There are two methods of choosing your pumpkin to carve. The first way is my favorite. As you stroll through the pumpkin patch a certain individual pumpkin will jump out at you! That's the ONE! The other method is to have a pattern or face in mind and look for a pumpkin that will work with your design. Usually a large stem makes a nice addition to the pumpkin.
Remember!. The more unusual the better!

  • Bring your camera! There are many fun photo spots!
  • Come spend the day by the California coastline and hand pick your Halloween pumpkin!
  • We are open every daily, 9 AM - 6 PM from October 1st through Halloween. After Halloween we will remain open on the honor system until Christmas.
  • We are dog friendly. We kindly ask that you keep them on a leash at all times and pick-up after them, if need be.

Santa Cruz County Symphony
Music of specific and sacred place, reflective of the harmony within ourselves and within the universe
Date: Every day (Oct 7-Oct 8)
Ages: all
Special Instructions: Sat at Civic ~ Sun at Mello

Music of the Spheres

We open our 60th Anniversary season with music of specific and sacred place, reflective of the harmony within ourselves and within the universe. Beginning with Vivaldi's immortal rendering of The Four Seasons, featuring our renowned concertmaster Nigel Armstrong, we will then present Holst's equally famous and fantastical suite of astrological archetypes, The Planets.

The Four Seasons is a group of four violin concerti by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives a musical expression to a season of Earth's year. The four concerti each has 3 short movements, and the whole collection lasts approximately 42 minutes. Sections of this piece have been used in numerous movies, TV shows and commercials, most notably the 1981 film The Four Seasons with Alan Alda. Even today, Vivaldi's work continues to inspirecontemporary soloists and composers.

The Planets is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrologicalcharacter as defined by Holst. Earth was not included because it is based on astrological, not astronomical, planets. Pluto was not included because it had not yet been discovered. The complete composition lasts approximately 49 minutes.

Based on the 20th Century Fox Picture, and set in 1979, this musical comedy of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical and bigoted boss, Franklin Hart, Jr. In a turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee manage to kidnap Hart and trap him in his own house, while assuming control of his department. The women work together to help improve both their personal and professional situations. But just how long can they keep him tied up?

This show is rated PG-13. Some content may not be appropriate for young children. The show is directed by MCT veteran Daria E. Troxell, with music direction by Nicki Kerns and choreography by Whitney James-Heskett. More information regarding the creative staff is available at: https://mctshows.org/press-release/
