(0 Nov 2017) SealNamedPatches.jpgA SEAL NAMED PATCHES: What Weddell Seals Taught Us About Life At The Bottom Of The World

Roxanne Beltran, Ph.D. Student
University of Alaska Fairbanks
Patrick Robinson, Ph.D.
Año Nuevo Island Reserve Director

During the warmest days of the year, Antarctica's Weddell seals rest on the ice, soak up the sun, and replace their fur coat in a process called molting. Roxanne and Patrick study the molt and how it impacts the seals' abilities to dive deep, stay warm, and raise pups in the harshest environment on the planet. For their research, they fly halfway across the world, wear thick cold-weather gear, and travel by snow machine and helicopter to search for the seals.

Join these Antarctic explorers as they discuss the logistics of Antarctic research, recent research findings, and their newly-released children's book (for ages 5-8) that infuses learning with the excitement of scientific discovery! Come for the science, bring the kids, and stay for the book signing in the exhibit hall.

State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

Friends is leading a multi-year restoration effort to preserve and interpret the site and is partnering with California State Parks to open the adobe as a State Historic Park. It is Santa Cruz County's second State Historic Park and the first non-beach state park in the Pajaro Valley.

Located in Larkin Valley, near Watsonville, the two-story Castro Adobe, built between 1848-49, is one of the finest examples of a rancho hacienda in the Monterey Bay area. Open House visitors will be able to tour the property including the restored cocina (kitchen) and the Potter-Church Garden. The garden is a unique outdoor space originally created by then-owners Elizabeth and David Potter (1968 to 1972), in consultation with noted landscape architect Thomas Church.

The Castro Adobe is open on a limited basis for special events, such as Open House Days. Parking is extremely limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Learn more on our website.

Take a trip to the '20s, in all of their toe-tapping glory, with a modern twist on social and political comedy still relevant today. Based on a novel by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro, the 1920s' prohibition story features bootleggers, dowagers and chorus girls, with nods to marijuana legalization and the political influence of the 1 percent. The show, a hit on Broadway, is here to make Santa Cruz laugh out loud.

Music by George and Ira Gershwin, book by Joe DiPieto

Directed by: Kathryn Adkins

We encourage you to keep up to date with these building projects and to participate in the planning process. These are YOUR libraries, so lets imagine the future together.

Each sculpture performs an absurd miniature drama reflecting its maker's worldview and sense of humor. Take a look at their exposed inner workings and investigate the low-tech mechanisms that make these automata move.

Santa Cruz Fruit Tree Project

(0 Nov 2017) persimmons.jpgDear persimmon lovers,

It's truly amazing how many persimmon trees there are in Santa Cruz. It is perhaps the most abundant fruit in town, and certainly the most abundant fruit that ripens quickly and produces so much that many residents can't keep up.

This Sunday we're offering another persimmon harvest on the east side, starting at 1pm. To RSVP, contact Sandy at chrkdvis@cruzio.com.

IF YOU ARE NOT COMMITTED TO SHOWING UP AT THE EVENT, DO NOT RESERVE A SPOT!

It takes a lot of (volunteer) work to maintain this organization and plan the events. When people flake, it's disrespectful of our time, and demoralizing. It's also disrespectful to those on the waiting list who would have liked to come in your place.

Also some people have been asking what kind of persimmons we'll be picking.

Most persimmons in town including at our events are hachiya, i.e. the squishy kind. If you get lucky we might pick some fuyu, but not confirmed at this time. If you don't like the squishy texture, wait until they're totally gooey and weird, and freeze them for a sorbet-like treat. They're also great dried, and you can dry them before they're totally wet and they dry faster and still taste fine. Also for one of the best desserts ever, look up "boozy persimmon pudding".

See you out there.
