State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

Mountain Community Theater
The fruitcakes of Mountain Community Theater invite you to take an irreverent, comedic, yet heartwarming trip through the holida
Date: Every day (Nov 24-Dec 17)
Ages: 12+ Admission Fees: $17-$20
Special Instructions: Fri & Sat 8pm, Sun2pm

The fruitcakes of Mountain Community Theater invite you to take an irreverent, comedic, yet heartwarming trip through the holidays in their upcoming comedy production of Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor's The Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged) playing Nov. 24 through Dec. 17, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, and Sundays at 2 PM at Park Hall in Ben Lomond.

Tickets can be purchased for $20 general and $17 for students and seniors at www.mctshows.org, or at www.brownpapertickets.com.

It is festive, funny, physical and fun as some of your favorite MCT comedians poke fun at many holiday traditions, while stepping on more than a few sacred cows. There's lots of singing, a live band, and you can even bring a wrapped holiday gift of $5 value or less and participate in the audience gift exchange! Delicious holidays desserts will be served, as well as inspired madness! This hilarious show promises to boost your spirits and bring gales of holiday belly-aching laughter!

The show stars Santa Cruz area favorite comedians Karin Babbitt, W. Scott Whisler, and Jackson Wolffe, and is directed by MCT veteran Kathie Kratochvil, with musical direction by Mazera Cox, and choreography by Shannon Marie Kerr.

Audience members will enter the world belonging to the "Saint Everybody's Non-Denominational Universalist Church" who are currently hosting their annual "Multicultural Interfaith Holiday Variety Show and Christmas Pageant." Scheduled to perform are groups such as: The Holy Strollers (Holiday toddlers perform the Nativity story); as well as The Christmas Boys' Choir from our Our Lady of Eternal Suspicion Catholic Church.

  • Unfortunately, it is a dark and stormy night in the San Lorenzo Valley and all the roads into the Valley have been closed (sound familiar?). Fortunately, the costume trunks and props from all the scheduled performing acts arrived before the big storm. Unfortunately, the scheduled performers can't get into the Valley. So, the evening's hosts must perform the show themselves! Join us as Mountain Community Theater rekindles the joy, inner-child and familial dysfunction inside us all! This show is recommended for ages 12 and older.

    Ages: All
Special Instructions: Pier 15, which is on the Embarcadero at Green Street

(0 Nov 2017) Exloratorium_CuriousContraptions.jpgExplore small, surreal worlds at Curious Contraptions, a temporary exhibition of the charming, often hilarious mechanical sculptures known as automata. Like complex mechanical toys, these whimsical machines are brought to life by intricate arrangements of handmade cams, cranks, and other simple mechanisms.

Each sculpture performs an absurd miniature drama reflecting its maker's worldview and sense of humor. Take a look at their exposed inner workings and investigate the low-tech mechanisms that make these automata move.

This year, Curious Contraptions features the varied viewpoints of artists including Carlos Zapata, Paul Spooner, Keith Newstead, and Fi Henshall, plus artist residencies with Zapata, Hernán Lira, and Noga Elhassid.

Come see the reindeer on loan from Santa
Date: Every Fri and Sa (Nov 18-Jan 1)

    (A Dec) Christmas_ZooReindeer2015.jpg

Santa is sending his favorite reindeer, "Belle", "Holly" and "Peppermint" to spread holiday cheer at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens!  Until January 1, majestic reindeer will be romping at SF Zoo's Playfield Lawn, near the spectacular Elinor Friend Playground.  We will have a Program Guide at the Reindeer from 11:30-4 daily.

Celebrate the holiday season by visiting the animals who help Santa deliver presents to all the children in the land.  Learn what they eat (besides carrots and cookies on Christmas Eve) and see what they look like up close and on the ground.  Reindeer and caribou are classified as the same genus and species - Rangifer tarandus.

Reindeer are domesticated caribou and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists them as "vulnerable" after a 40% decline in population over the last 20-30 years.  Reindeer are highly adapted to their life in cold climates as they have two thick layers of fur to keep them warm and what are called "turbinate" bones in their nose, which helps warm cold air before it enters their lungs.

They also have specially designed hooves which provide extra traction on the wet, spongy tundra during the spring; in the winter the footpads shrink and tighten, exposing the rim of the hoof which cuts into the ice and snow for a surer grip.  They are used by many circumpolar cultures for their meat, hide, milk and antlers.

    History of Lucia Day

Before daybreak, Lucia, dressed in a white gown with red sash, wearing a crown of blazing candles in her hair, emerges our of the darkness carrying a tray of saffron buns and steaming coffee to awaken the family.  According to one legend, Lucia was born in Sicily and secretly distributed her large dowry by candlelight to the poor.

Dec 13th on the Julian calendar was the winter solstice celebrated by the Norse; now this date is the traditional Lucia Day and is celebrated all over Scandinavia in homes, schools, hospitals, and city halls marking the darkest time of the year when all celebrate the beginning of the Jul season and the return of the sun - a festival of light!

We'll explore how Herman Melville tips his hand as a proto-environmentalist

    Admission Fees: Free

(0 Nov 2017) MobyDick.jpgJoin us Thursday, December 7th, from 6-7:30 p.m. for this multimedia lecture on Moby Dick with Dr. Richard King, research associate at Williams Mystic.

The story and characters of Moby-Dick are as ingrained in American popular culture as those from Harry Potter and Star Wars. Yet how in this twenty-first century should we read a novel that seems at first glance to simply celebrate the brutal killing of whales?

In this multimedia talk, looking in particular at the giant squid, zooplankton, and his hours up aloft in the masthead searching for whales, we'll explore how Herman Melville tips his hand as a proto-environmentalist and one who carefully represents both the ideas of the naturalists of his day and his observations from his own lengthy experience at sea himself.

What Melville could never have imagined in 1850s, however, is a global ocean that might be vulnerable to human impact, let alone one that might require our stewardship. No recent familiarity with the novel is necessary or expected to attend and enjoy this presentation! There will be time for discussion.

We can all have an impact on preserving our natural resources. This month, Citizen Science invites you to learn about ways to do just that. Families welcome...caution, best for teens and up
Date: The 2nd Fri of every month at 7:00pm

(0 Oct 2017) ThrillerRide2017.jpgIt's close to midnight and something evil's lurking In the dark
Under the moonlight you see a bike that almost stops Your heart
You try to scream (Bike Party!), but terror takes the sound before You make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes
    You're paralyzed
'Cause this is thriller, THRILLER RIDE!
Friday the 13th, 7pm at the Bike Church!

    ...Darkness falls across the land
The 7pm hour is close at hand
Creatures ride in search of jams
    To cruise through y'all's neighborhood!

Santa Cruz Bike Party is a mobile party for riders of all ages, experience levels, and types to meet, ride, and play together in the streets. Rides are 7-10 miles long with music and dance breaks along the way. Rides move at a relatively slow pace and no one is left behind. Each ride has a theme and riders are encouraged to wear costumes or decorate their bikes to fit the theme.

SC Bike Party starts and ends outside the Bike Church at 703 Pacific Ave downtown. The route is not the same every time, but each month organizers will post the route online ahead of time in case anyone misses the start and wants to catch up.

Once per month, all year long. We meet at 7pm every second Friday of the month. Rides usually leave about 7:15 and last about 2 hours.

The atmosphere of the SC Bike Party is fun, (zombie) friendly, welcoming, and safe. Our goal is to celebrate cycling and build community, not to cause conflict with car drivers. Please help us maintain a positive and safe atmosphere by keeping in mind the following guidelines:

    Guidelines
    -

Stay to the Right / Stop at Lights - This is not Critical Mass. Please stay to the right on 2-lane roads, or in the right lane on larger roads.
    - Ride Straight - Please help avoid crashes by riding predictably, without any sudden turns or stops.
    - Don't Hate - Please roll past any conflict that might present itself during the ride.
    - Pack your Trash - Bike partiers aspire to leave party stops in better condition than we found them.
    - Don't Get Smashed - Riding while inebriated poses a danger to yourself and others. Don't ruin the fun for everyone else by overdoing it.

    Bring:
Lights - Rides are at night, so let's make sure to be visible.
Locks - No bikes have been stolen from the SC Bike Party, but during breaks better to be safe than sorry.
Layers - As we all know Santa Cruz evenings can get damp and chilly.
Water, snacks - Our stops are not always near stores, so best to bring what you need.
Tube, patch kit, pump, tools - The ride is unsupported; please come prepared.

Every month we produce a 2nd Saturday on the Farm, a family event that focuses on a particular area of agriculture each month. Visitors can participate in the regular activities of the Ag History Project plus others related to the day's special focus. We host over 2,500 visitors each year at 2nd Saturday on the Farm.

We have created some unique interactive educational activities to help you have fun learning about past agricultural practices. What we like to call our "usual" activities include:

    • Wooden cow milking: we have life-size wooden cows with rubber teats that help you learn how to milk a cow.
    • Kid-driven tractor: we retrofitted a John Deere tractor so that anyone can learn to drive it. You sit in the seat and control the steering wheel while a trained volunteer stands on a platform to your right to controls the speed. We even have space for a parent or friend to stand to your left and enjoy the ride.
    • We are currently working on creating a stationary tractor that you can drive down a crop row and the computer screen in front of you displays how well you are handling the tractor.

If you have walked on a clean beach, enjoyed a park, attended an arts event, music event, adopted a pet, received health care services, or enrolled a child in an activity-you have encountered the good work of numerous local nonprofits.

    Burleigh H. Murray Guided Hike

    Sunday December 24 at 10am

Discover the lives of early pioneers and farming families who first settled the San Mateo Coast on this 2.5-mile, 2-hour hike along Mills Creek. Please bring water, snacks, layered clothing, and walking shoes. Event is free; rain cancels. Meet at the Burleigh Murray parking lot located on Higgins-Purisima Road 1.5 miles east of Highway 1 near Half Moon Bay. For more information, please call (650) 726-8814 or email HMBParksVolunteer@parks.ca.gov. Events made possible by Coastside State Parks Association and California State Parks.

Purchased by the State of California in 1983 this historic ranch property is hidden in a pristine valley south of Half Moon Bay. The area offers solitude, groves of mature eucalyptus, and a rich assortment of wildlife. With the addition of Rancho Raymundo at the east boundary, park property extends from Higgins Purisima Road in the west to Skyline Blvd. in the east.

Park equipment imageBurleigh H. Murray, for whom the acquisition is named, was born on the ranch July 19, 1865. His Father came to California from Vermont in 1852 following the cry of gold and working in the mines at Auburn, Placer county. In 1857 he settled at the present Murray ranch with some sheep and cattle and began a successful dairy farm.

The Mills Barn and surrounding outbuildings, are maintained in a condition of arrested decay. Mills Barn hugs the hill beside perennial Mills Creek. This historic structure dates back to the late 1800's and is a good representation of an English Lake County Bank Barn.

Originally 200 feet in length and capable of housing 100 dairy cows, the Mills Barn is one of two known examples of a bank barn in California. The foundation of the barn and other buildings, including an un-reinforced arched stone bridge, rely on Italian masonry techniques dating back to Roman times.
