Fish Tour: Seining in the San Lorenzo River
Observe how seining is conducted while learning about steelhead biology and lagoon dynamics.
09/23/2019 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Join us on your lunch break to learn more about steelhead and other fish in the San Lorenzo River! Staff from the Coastal Watershed Council, the City of Santa Cruz Water Department Watershed Section and Hagar Environmental Science will be leading a tour along the Santa Cruz Riverwalk to observe and discuss fish monitoring activities on September 23rd from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

Throughout the summer the City of Santa Cruz Water Department routinely conducts seining along the lower San Lorenzo River to determine the size of steelhead populations, fish growth and age and size class compositions of the lagoon steelhead population. Seining is a method of monitoring fish using a seine, a net that hangs vertically in the water and is deployed from shore or by boat. During routine seining events, crews work carefully to catch, measure, count and then release steelhead.

The City of Santa Cruz invites fish enthusiasts to come take a closer look into this fish monitoring. During this session, attendees will be able to observe how seining is conducted while learning about steelhead biology and lagoon dynamics. Fish biologists conducting the seining may also join the observers to describe the process and answer questions about their findings. However, their main priority is fish safety and survival and they will break to meet with the group only as their monitoring protocol allows.

We hope you will join us for a fish-filled afternoon! This tour is limited to 30 participants. Please RSVP below to reserve your spot on the tour. We will meet at 12:00 p.m. on the west side of the San Lorenzo River Trestle Bridge and may move down to Main Beach or up the Riverwalk depending on where the crews are working.

City of Watsonville
There's an old saying that "the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago and the second best time is now."
Date: 10/20/2018 from 9:00am to 12:00pm

(0 A October 2018) TreePlantingOct20.jpgThere's an old saying that "the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago and the second best time is now." The City of Watsonville is pleased to kick off our fall tree planting season with an event dedicated to climate action. Please join City staff and local nonprofit partners Regeneration-Pájaro Valley Climate Action, Watsonville Wetlands Watch, and Pajaro Valley Arts Council as we plant trees at Muzzio Park and work towards a healthier Watsonville on Saturday, October 20th from 9am - Noon.

Materials, refreshments, and a free lunch for planting volunteers will be provided. Participants will learn about local ways to engage in climate change action, and will create art with Pajaro Valley Arts.

Trees are a symbol for a strength and resiliency, and an indicator of communities that invest in a healthy and sustainable future. As trees grow, they help stop climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Once grown, the trees rooted at Muzzio Park will provide canopies of shade decreasing the effects of rising temperatures and keeping Watsonville cool. They will also support habitat for birds and create a refreshing resting spot for park visitors.

We look forward to seeing you there! For more information, email Rachel Kippen at rachel.kippen@cityofwatsonville.org

**This effort is part of the Watsonville Urban Forest Revitalization Project funded by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as part of the California Climate Investments Program.

The potluck brings a few dozen people out, each with a dish they’ve brought to share.

Cost for the dance is $15–20 per person on a sliding scale; everyone contributes what they can! PLEASE NOTE THAT AN RSVP IS RECOMMENDED but not required and is helpful for our own planning purposes. Nobody will be turned away.

The 7pm Dance lasts 3 hours and features the County Line Pickers (Jim Davies, bass; Joni Davies, guitar; Hide Kawatsur, mandolin; Ken Clarkson, banjo; Luke Abbott and Nancy Vail, fiddle) with caller Andy Wilson to lead the do-si-dos and more!
