California Rodeo Salinas
2018 California Rodeo... Cowgirl and Cowboy Up!
Every day (Jul 19-Jul 22)
Location: Salinas Sports Complex, 1034 Main Street , Salinas Map

(Special Event Images / Graphics) CaliforniaRodeoPoster2014.jpgKnown for its week-long cavalcade of events, California Rodeo "Big Week" is the largest community event held in Salinas. Parades, barbecues, cowboy poetry, fireworks, concerts, a carnival, and much more.

Big Week offers something for every member of the family, and a chance for the entire community to participate in the California Rodeo.

The Rodeo itself is designed to operate like a two-ring circus, each Rodeo performance features events that occur in the arena and on the track simultaneously. While the classic event of saddle bronc riding bucks out in the arena, a horse race speeds by on the track.

Each year, the Salinas Rodeo ranks in the top 20 of nearly 800 North American rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. For four action-packed days, more the 50,000 spectators pass through our gates to see the country's top professional rodeo athletes compete.

CYT
Musical adventure, a tale of thrilling escapes, comedy and inspiration for the whole family.
Date: Every day (May 18-May 27)

(0 A May 2018) CYT_TomSawyer2018.jpgThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the irresistible story of a fourteen-year-old boy growing up in the heartland of America, based on the classic novel. Filled with foot-stomping, toe-tapping songs by Don Schlitz ("The Gambler") and with a book by Ken Ludwig, this musical adventure is a tale of thrilling escapes, comedy and inspiration for the whole family.

Set in 1840 Missouri, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the tale of young Tom Sawyer and the never ending mischief of which he so often finds himself a part; whether it's matching wits with Aunt Polly, tricking his friends into whitewashing a fence for him or narrowly escaping the clutches of a murderous villain. Along with his best friend, Huckleberry Finn, and his love interest, Becky Thatcher, the greatest Tom Sawyer exploits are plucked from the book and plopped onto the stage.

Aside from having one of the most recognizable titles from literary history, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a superb family-friendly show.

State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

This classic comedy, from beloved playwright Neil Simon, centers on two men. The slovenly Oscar Madison, and the neat freak Felix Unger. The action takes place in the apartment of divorcee Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Felix Unger, fastidious, depressed, and none too tense, has just been separated from his wife, and is looking for a place to stay. Hilarity ensues when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together as The Odd Couple is born. Tony Nominated for Best Play and Winner of Best Author of a Play, 1965.

Learn about kelp forests and get a great reward in the form of a delicious treat
Date: Every Su and Fri (May 18-May 20)
Ages: Adults and Children 10+
Special Instructions: Friday and Sunday

Our kelp pickling class is a wonderful endeavor for the whole family. It foretells the times of community gatherings to provide food for all. Since early times, home canners have enjoyed the art of pickling foods. It is one of the oldest known methods of preserving food. The Chinese were fermenting vegetables as early as the third century B.C and the Romans were pickling by the first century A.D.

Pickles even followed the colonist to America and now picked kelp is coming to Santa Cruz! What a great way to be one with our kelp forest and get a great reward in the form of a delicious treat. We will pick a beach noted for a variety of succulent sea vegetables. Here we will search for our in tide pools and by boogie board. We will then return to Adventure Sports to pickle as only a family group can do-the pool will be open for fun.

This is a wonderful activity for everyone in your family and will instill an ethos of community for one and all. We will have an evening of planning on Friday followed by a morning of collecting and pickling on Sunday. Finishing touches for the feast will be assigned to students.

10-17 year olds are encouraged to attend but must have an adult/guardian take the class with them and must be willing to use a boogie board in the ocean. No license is required for collecting.

Private group outings are also available, call (831) 458-3648 for details.
