In an effort to maintain safety during the July 4th holiday the department will be enacting a Safety Enhancement Zone in certain areas between July 2-6. The zone, with a map available  creates triple fines for certain municipal code violations. In addition there will be detours and road closures on July 4th.

As in previous years, deputies on the Fourth of July also will check beachgoers in Live Oak and other county areas for alcohol, glass, weapons and fireworks - which are prohibited on beaches.

Road Closures

County leaders plan to control traffic in several areas from 7 p.m. to midnight July Fourth so emergency vehicles can reach the beach. Deputies also will check beachgoers for alcohol, glass, weapons and fireworks.

Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

The Municipal Airport will open its doors on July 4th from 5:00 pm until 9:30pm. for the "Fire in the Sky" Open House. This Open House event is an important part of the Airport's efforts to reach out to the community and highlight the importance of this community asset to our region.

This year law enforcement aviation assets from the California Highway Patrol and Santa Cruz County Sheriff will display their aircraft. Additionally, air ambulance Calstar and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will bring aircraft to the field. The Watsonville Municipal Airport tenants have also been invited to display personal, flying club, trainers and corporate aircraft.

Fireworks seem to be the highlight of most people's memories of the 4th of July. This year's Fireworks Show will surely be a highlight for many of our community's children as it is shaping up to be one the best ever.

Fireworks on The Green will once again be at the Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center, 16500 Condit Road, located between Tennant and E. Dunne Avenues. Gates will open at 5 pm so you can come on in and set up a good viewing spot for the fireworks, which will begin around 9:30 pm

We are excited to bring back perennial favorites-the Usual Suspects, Country Cougars and our beloved Patriotic Singers! The show starts at 6:00pm. The Country Cougars are a hot 'rockin' country band playing new and classic country and quickly becoming one of Northern California's favorite bands.

Country Cougars play at some of the premier nightclubs in the bay area and cover artists including Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Zac Brown, Kenny Chesney and Eric Church as well as the country legends Johnny Cash, Patty Loveless, Alan Jackson, Brooks and Dunn and many others. The energy of this band gets the crowd on their feet dancing and ready to party!

MH Freedom Fest Patriotic Sing ~ Tuesday July 3, 6-7pm

Karen Crane and the Patriotic Singers make a return appearance at 7:30pm to give everyone a chance to catch a glimpse of the wonderful program they perform the night before at the Patriotic Sing, kicking off our Freedom Fest celebration.

Closing out the show will be The Usual Suspects with their high-energy classic rock. One of the South Bay's most popular bands, they feature everything from Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and ZZ Top, to Santana, U2, Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Van Halen, AC/DC and so much more. The Usual Suspects have performed for over 18 years as part of the Morgan Hill Freedom Fest Celebrations, alternating between the Music Fest and Fireworks Show.
