Matilda the Musical
The power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life
Every Fri and Sa (Oct 18-Oct 26) from 7:00pm to 9:30pm
Location: Rio theatre, 1205 Soquel, Santa Cruz Map

(0 A September 2019) matilda.jpgInspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however - the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs and an unforgettable star turn for a young actress, Matilda is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Pescadero Festival
Aquaint gathering of artists and artisans, locals and out-of-towners alike, showcasing their creativity and enjoying a down home
Date: Every day (Aug 18-Aug 19) from 10:00am to 6:00pm

(0 A Aug 2018) PescaderoFestival300.jpgPAFF is Going Green!

This year, we've teamed up with the local chapter of Heirs to Our Oceans (H2OO), a youth-driven organization dedicated to changing how we see and use single-use products that negatively impact our oceans and our future.

Welcome to the Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival, a quaint gathering of artists and artisans, locals and out-of-towners alike, showcasing their creativity and enjoying a down home, country good time. Founded in 1991 by a group of local artists seeking an outlet for the local community of talent, the Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival was born, and has grown to become the event of the year for locals and longtime visitors.

Don't be fooled however by the abundance of artists in our midst (though we do seem to have more than our fair share). PAFF has become far more than just a festival showcasing local talent; thanks in large part to the dedication and generosity of the people behind PAFF, it is also a major player in promoting its local youth and programs. Whether its granting funds to programs within the schools, or scholarships to local seniors, you will find the influence of PAFF in many nooks and corners of the community.

State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola
