State Park New Brighton
Self-guided tour highlights history of Pacific Rim migrations
Date: Every Su, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri and Sa from 10:00am to 4:00pm
Ages: 7-12

Tour the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach

Come explore the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center at New Brighton State Beach. This free mini-museum highlights the history of Pacific Rim migrations and how they have influenced the Monterey Bay area.

The exhibits explore the contributions of Chinese fishers, who established fishing camps on the Monterey Bay coastline beginning in the 1850s. Fishers dried and shipped most of their catch to markets up and down the coast, as well as across the Pacific. Chinese fish merchants also sold their fresh catch in local towns. China Beach, as New Brighton was known at the time, lasted until the mid-1880s.

The center, which is supported by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays. It also includes a ParkStore, offering nature and history-themed merchandise for sale. All proceeds benefit local parks and beaches.

Self-guided tours of the Pacific Migrations Visitor Center are free. Docent-led tours are available for groups. Contact Jean Bernard at the Visitor Center, 831-464-5620, to schedule. Parking at New Brighton State Beach is $10 and supports the park. New Brighton State Beach is located at 1500 Park Ave. in Capitola

(0 A Aug 2018) SuperStokedSurfMamas.jpgntroducing the Super Stoked Surf Mamas of Pleasure Point Movie Premiere Night A fun and inspiring film and music event on Friday, August 24 celebrates the local release of "Introducing the Super Stoked Surf Mamas of Pleasure Point." Part of the evenings proceeds will benefit for Sienna House, a Santa Cruz non-profit that helps homeless pregnant women get back on their feet.

Super Stoked Surf Mamas (for short), a documentary film about friendship, community, pregnancy and surfing, features five Santa Cruz surf moms who support each other to continue surfing during pregnancy and after the birth of their children. The inspiring and delightful film recently had its world premiere at Europes largest surf film festival located in Anglet, France, where the film won the Audience Choice Award  an honor rarely given to a non-French film.

The evening will open at 7pm with a musical set by Santa Cruz favorites The Shapes, who's singer/guitarist Ashley Lloyd not only contributed several songs to the film, but is also one of the five mamas featured in the documentary!

Following the music, "La Maestra," a short documentary about a young Mexican woman teacher who becomes the first woman from her town to surf will then be shown. Mayra Aguilar, the star of the film, is also one of the five women in Super Stoked Surf Mamas, which rounds out the evening. The five Santa Cruz surf mamas and filmmaker Elizabeth Pepin Silva will be in attendance to answer questions afterwards, and local vendors will have booths set up with items for sale.

Friday, August 24
Doors open at 6pm, Program from 7-9.
Santa Cruz Hope, 4525 Soquel Avenue, Soquel, CA 95073
The Shapes will open the evening with a musical set, followed by the films "La Maestra" and "Introducing The Super Stoked Surf Mamas of Pleasure Point."

Please note all ages welcome. Kids 5 and under do not need a ticket.

(0 A Aug 2018) DiscoveryLC_OpenHouse.jpgMAKERSPACE LEARNING AT DLC'S OPEN HOUSE!

The Discovery Learning Center invites you and your mini-makers to visit our annual Open House for an exploration of Makerspace Learning!

Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they engage deeply in science, engineering, art and tinkering.  Makerspace learning is student-driven, creative, collaborative, and views mistakes as valuable steps on the road to learning.

Many of the adjectives that describe the Makerspace movement aptly describe the DLC as well:  creative; collaborative; hands-on; and playful.  We hope to include more Makerspace events at the DLC in the future, so please come join us and get involved!
At our Open House, children and youth will be able to engage in some cool Makerspaces, including:

  • Craft Creation Station;
  • Back-to-School Fashion Repurposing;
  • Make Your Own Book; and
  • DIY Back-to-School Pictures.

In addition, our popular Entrepreneur Row is back, where kids can sell their own creations.

While your kids are busy making, you can fill your own cup by attending two workshops led by educator Heddi Craft: "Exploring Homeschooling" (10-11 am) and "Goal Setting for Your Homeschool" (1-2 pm).

Lunch will be available for purchase.

LitWits Workshops
NEW! Because poetry is important.
Date: Every weekday (Aug 20-Aug 24) from 9:00am to 12:00pm
Ages: 8+ Admission Fees: $295
Special Instructions: Sibling discount $20 each

(0 A July 2018) LitWits_Poetry.jpg

The act of writing poetry teaches writing skills that apply in all genres, as well as the art of concise diction, careful speaking and listening, and most importantly, empathy. It's also mysterious, beautiful, and FUN!

In PoetryWriting Camp, poets ages 8+ will learn a classic form of poetry each day, each originating in a different part of the world. To build and embellish those forms, we'll help kids learn:

-how to condense a powerful visual into a single word or simple phrase
-the importance of rhythm and rhyme to tone and meaning; scansion skills
-the emotional and literal connotations of fresh metaphors and similes
-how to convey emotion and a physical description in a single word-image
-the significance of objects in a poem; how symbols work
-the power of their own voices
important poetry terms and their applications (put into practice)
We inspire young writers in creative, kinetic ways:

• sensory props to vivify some of the world's best poems
• inspiring excerpts by masterful poets, for appreciation, study, and emulation
• fun activities that show why certain techniques work
• engaging art projects that connect us to our own poems' themes

(0 A July 2018) LitWitsLadies3.jpgInstructors: Becky and Jenny, sisters and LitWits founders. Jenny has a BA in English literature and an MFA in creative nonfiction and poetry writing. She's been a K-6 teacher and a K-12 language arts tutor, and her scholarship, essays, and poems have appeared in several journals. Becky is a literature-based homeschool teacher and a journalism major who spent four years as a staff writer for The Register Pajaronian. Both Becky and Jenny are currently writing creative biographies of two fascinating Bay Area women of history.

Hours: 9am - 12pm, Monday through Friday

Ages: 8 and up. Our activities are geared to accommodate a range of ages simultaneously.

Cost: The cost of each camp includes all supplies; children bring their own no-nuts snack. LitWits Workshops is an approved vendor for Ocean Grove Charter School and Inspire Charter Schools. Charter parents, please enter promo code CHARTER-C to register, then request a purchase order or enrichment certificate.

Cancellation Policy: If you cancel at least 30 days before the event, you can choose a refund or makeup; within 30 days, you'll get a makeup. (Use promo code MAKEUP to re-register, and please remind us, in the Notes field, which event you missed.) There are no refunds or makeups for no-shows. We hope that makes sense and seems fair!
