Opening in September 2009

We believe that a network of small, high-quality, college-preparatory charter schools can expand opportunities for families and improve achievement for all students. That school choice in general, and charter schools in particular, are vital to catalyzing improvement in public education. And finally, only by realigning our collective vision on student outcomes can we effect real change in our schools.

Tomorrow:

BEACON STUDENTS WILL:

  • Outperform comparable district school students on CAT-6, CST tests, and SAT test.
  • Pass each class with a C or better or be held back (no social promotion).
  • Pass two AP Exams with a score of 3 or better.
  • Achieve a 100% pass rate on the California High School Exit Exam (CHSEE) for mathematics and English Language Arts;
  • Achieve a “college-ready” score of 80 in the 12th grade on Beacon’s own college-knowledge exam.
  • Perform 100 hours of community service during high school.
  • Graduate from high school and enroll in post-secondary education (and not require post-secondary remediation).
  • Achieve a 97% persistence rate while attending a UC or CSU.
  • Achieve a 90% persistence rate while attending a community college.

BEACON SCHOOLS WILL:

  • Use standards based interim assessments every six weeks to measure student progress and will make educational progress by grade publicly available.
  • Use UC’s comprehensive teacher development program that moves teachers along a continuum of beginning, emerging, applying, integrating, and innovating.
  • Pay teachers based on a comprehensive, diverse review of their performance.
  • Ensure that the “students on task” rate exceeds 90% during daily school scans.
  • Keep track of each graduate’s progress (good and bad) through the first two years of college through quarterly on-line surveys. Beyond that, through our Alumni network.
  • Have a positive fund balance and cumulative reserve for economic uncertainty not to exceed 5%.
  • Present financial statements fit for public consumption and in comparison to traditional districts.
  • Deliver a 90% “parent satisfaction” and “I’d recommend a Beacon school to a friend” rate.

Ages: Grade 6 and up
