(Site Photos) FallLeaves.jpgAppreciate The Season

with a nod to Kadi Prescott

The changing of the season brings with it many opportunities to teach children about the beauty of nature.  Fall weather brings relief from the blazing heat of the summer sun. It's perfect hiking weather.  We have nearby mountains and hills and seaside sloughs which are ideal for nature hikes, even our local neighborhoods hold surprises for those willing to look!  Our friend Kadi goes hiking with all seven of her children, so no excuses!  Get out there!  You'll be glad you did!

(Site Photos) BluejayFeather.jpg

Give each child a list of twenty, ten or five age-appropriate items to find (bluejay feather, pine cone, oak leaf, pebble the size of a marble, snake skin...). In Santa Cruz good places to hike are Big Basin, Quail Hollow Ranch, Henry Cowell or Elkhorn Slough because they each offer activities for families.  After the kids find all the scavenger hunt items,  enjoy a picnic lunch.  While relaxing, discuss how the items the children found play a part in our eco-system.

(Site Photos) Kadifamily.jpg     Back home Kadi encourages the children to  use their finds to make a family collage. "Sometimes, we use the leaves to make beautiful paintings on canvas. Little ones can even join in the fun."

"There are many lessons to be taught using the beauty of Autumn. I encourage all of you to take these next few weeks to find hidden lessons through hikes, apple picking, pumpkin selecting,  neighborhood walks and more!  It will become a tradition that you and your children cherish!"  Kadi

We would love to receive photos of your children and their found treasures.  Click on Family Favorites.  Brownie

Jody Went Shopping for You and Me!

Have you ever made a list and gone shopping for the exact same items at two different stores in order to see who really has the best prices? Or at least pretend shopped a list of staples? Many of us go to at least two or three different stores in one week. That's a lot of time spent shopping.

Our friend Jody Lombardo, a local entrepreneur who own, with her mom Judy, owns Fresh Prep Kitchens, is a very efficient shopper with exacting quality and price requirements.  Recently she shopped at Safeway for the ingredients (excluding salt etc. that you have on your shelves anyway) for three meals which Fresh Prep sells packaged and ready-to-cook.

Leaving out travelling time, Jody only counted time in the store and time in the kitchen. Here's a summary of their experiment:

    Ingredients Cost     Your Shopping/Prep Time
3 Do-it-Yourself Dinners $71.82 2+ hours
3 Fresh Prep Kitchen Dinners   $43.85 20 minutes
Savings $27.97 1 hour 45 minutes

Result: Happy Families with three meals --Roasted Turkey Pot-Pie, Chipotle Glazed Chicken, and Nonnie's Meatloaf. Time is precious in our fast-paced world and lately money is too! Save both when picking up family main dishes at Fresh Prep Kitchens in Santa Cruz or Mint in Scotts Valley.

Email us your 1) three favorite meals from Jody's menus

2) tell us the name of Jody's favorite vegetable (ask Jody), (Icons/Graphics) StarRed.jpg

and 3) you will be entered into a drawing to win

three "main meal family dinners for three."
