    Seymour Center Inspires and

Fosters Children's Art

Often children's art is delightful in the way it captures the essence of the subject. It's not burdened with adult baggage of how something "should" look.

In Santa Cruz County we're fortunate to have many organizations that nourish the arts within their programs. One of these is Seymour Marine Center. Seymour Center is far more than a sophisticated university home for Marine PhD's who study marine life in the world's oceans. It's a teaching museum, a resource for budding scientists. Its annual Marine Masterpieces Art contest is an inspiring marriage of science and art.

(Site Photos) SeymourJellyFish.jpg     Located on magnificent ocean bluffs above the Pacific Ocean at the west end of Santa Cruz, Seymour Center provides displays of beautiful, spectacular and strange creatures from the deep, as well as nearby tide pool inhabitants. The Center offers classes that introduce children to the possibilities and excitement of studying marine biology.

"The Seymour Center reflects the world of the scientist. Rather than the polished, nicely finished look of most museums and aquariums, the interior is similar to the labs and seawater aquaria where scientists spend their days. The Seymour Center is organized around the process of how scientists do their work-looking, testing, puzzling, and questioning."

(Site Photos) SeymourRRhodes.jpg   Seymour's Manager of Youth Programs, Suzanne Hebert, welcomes your young artist's entries, "Marine Masterpieces provides a fantastic opportunity for students of diverse interests to take part in ocean conservation. Students who love the ocean and marine biology are able to express themselves artistically. For students who have a strong interest in the arts, Marine Masterpieces allows them to learn about the ocean while showcasing their artistic talent."

In its 6th annual marine art contest, Seymour expects between 250-400 entries. Students in grades K through 12 should submit their artwork between February 3 and 17. All the contest details are online including submission "rules."  A visit to the center is a great way to gain inspiration for a marine masterpiece.

(Site Photos) SeymourStarfishArt.jpg     Winners are are announced and honored at an awards ceremony in April.  Six winners' masterpieces are then selected to become boxed notecards for sale at the Jingle Shells Holiday Crafts sale, with all proceeds going for the support of the Center.  Prizes for students and teachers include Seymour Center T-shirts, books, art supplies, memberships, and free future field trips!

Suki Wessling's Blog: Education is An Act of Faith

(Site Photos) SukiWessling.jpg

Sending a child to school is such a different experience than homeschooling. Sending your child away is an act of faith in other people, that they will recognize your child for the beautiful person you know he is, whatever faults he may have. Keeping your child at home is an act of faith - in yourself: faith that you can see your child's strengths when what calls out to you are the weaknesses, and that you will be able to show her the beauty in each part of her learning that will inspire her to go on.   (continued...)
