Giving the Gift of Dignity and Self-Reliance!

The first time I saw a Heifer International catalogue, I was enchanted, first with the appealing photos of families and children with (Site Photos) BoywithBlackGoat.jpgtheir new animals, then with the idea that I could donate money to provide an animal to a family in need.

Over the years I have given chickens, ducks, sheep, goats, pigs, a “share” of a cow and also of a water buffalo to people all over the world, including the USA.  This year I’m selecting honeybees.

Most of all I liked that my small gift supported the dignity and self-reliance of the recipients by giving them a chance to improve their lives through their own efforts. “Teach a man to fish” has been the philosophy behind Heifer International since 1944.

Happily, this is a gift that “multiplies.”   The catalogue (Site Photos) BoywithDucks.jpgis titled “The Most Important Gift Catalogue in the World”.  You can view wonderful photos online and ask for your own catalogue here.  Inspire your children to create stories about the animals and children receiving their gifts!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday...

(Site Photos) TurkeyPhoto.jpg ...and possibly the easiest holiday of all because family and friends all contribute wonderful dishes.  We visit, nibble, walk on the beach, play scrabble, call far-away relatives, feast and somehow end up in the hot tub as twilight comes on.  Life is full of small pleasures to be thankful for!

My earliest Thanksgiving memories are of the turkey running around the yard with no head and hanging by its feet on our swingset, picking up lots of feathers for my little brother and me and my father presiding over the making of the gravy and carving of the turkey.  My father made a mean gravy, the kind that made guests sit up and say, “Yum, what’s in this?!”  Email me with your favorite Thanksgiving memory and I’ll share his secret ingredient with you.
