Summertime = Readingtime
To me, Summertime means swimming, beaches, boogie boards and READING! I love to read! Mysteries are my favorites, especially the kind that follow a character through the years, through entire series of books and take place in past eras. (Try the Sister Fidelma series by Peter Tremayne, or any of Anne Perry's series.) I like biographies too. Thanks to my book club I am challenged to try books I might not otherwise choose --from contemporary novels to classics, even political commentary, although we have to mostly avoid that genre so we can remain friends.
If you want your children to be readers, let them see you reading (tv off) and of course read to them. Read out loud to your older children too and leave off at an exciting moment! Then oh so casually set the book down and leave the room. Have a "book night" at the dinner table. It's a great precursor to official book reports. Set the example with yours.
All our county libraries have story hours for children. Visit your library to find out about the Summer Reading Program that rewards children for reading! Billie Harris reads to young children and their parents at Capitola Book Cafe every Monday. That's a treat!
We went on a search for booklists for children to share with you, and found widely different lists with books that sound enchanting. You'll find them here!
Summer Programs
Summer camps offer a great variety of activities for your children. Most camps are offered on a weekly basis but many offer a daily rate and half days as well. You can find camps for children as young as 4 and up through the teens. There are full day and half day programs, day and overnight camps, visual arts, performing arts, sports, academics. Many schools and after-school enrichment programs switch to "summer mode" in June. If cost is critical, there is a wide range. Just do your research and you can find what suits your family's needs and interests. There truly is something for everyone.
Check out our A-Z Camp List. If you know of a program that is not listed with us, let us know!
